João Brandão's adventure as a photographer capturing Pride events bursts with as much color and dynamism as his own life story. Born in Brazil, João has lived in a whole array countries—Spain, France, England, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Angola, South Africa. He's a real citizen the globe. This fascinating mix cultural experiences deeply influences his work and outlook on life.
For nearly two decades, João has made his home in Jackson Heights, Queens. Known its rich cultural diversity, this neighborhood has given him an even greater appreciation the medley cultures that come together during Pride celebrations.
As well as being an accomplished interpreter and translator, João pours his heart and soul photojournalism. He often combines his photography with his advocacy work, particularly when it comes helping asylum seekers. But his passion really shines through during Pride events, capturing all that joy and sense community.
In 2023, João didn't have travel far snap pictures the Queens Pride parade—it literally passes by his doorstep 80th Street and 37th Avenue! This proximity gave him a special vantage point capture every detail this colorful event.
João sees Queens Pride as "an electric celebration diverse cultures, one the year's most thrilling experiences our community." him, it goes beyond simple snapshots. It's an emotional expression joy and authenticity, a "kaleidoscope color and joy," as he lovingly describes it.
What makes a Pride photograph truly stand out? João, it's "the gleaming spark in people's eyes, their infectious energy, and their intense desire be acknowledged and respected." These images are stories themselves, each frame showing "the deepest human craving connection and validation."
A highlight his 2023 collection features a Jamaican participant, decked out in rainbow colors with teal lipstick. Her look encapsulates João's vision—shy yet inviting, flirty yet powerful under his gaze. This photo isn't just a celebration individuality; it conveys a subtle message solidarity, emphasized by her rainbow Mickey sticker, which hints at Florida's socio-political climate.
João has been documenting Queens Pride since 2010. him, this event symbolizes a celebration people "free from fear, honored who they are." He adores this event because it represents "the essential values respect and acceptance." This year, he points out, feels different—the stakes are higher, challenges more daunting, and yet, their community's determination has never been stronger.
"The LGBTQ+ community has faced countless hurdles," João reflects, "and we'll never let fear constrain us. This year, we'll be fiercer, louder, and more memorable than ever." His thoughts echo the ongoing fight equality and capture spirit resilience.
In his "Pride in Pictures" project, João invites people from all over country share their Pride stories and images. It's a collaboration that not only expands Pride's narrative but also stitches together a quilt solidarity and shared experiences.
