Rutger published: João Brandão Captures the Essence of Pride Through His Lens

João Brandão's adventure as a photographer capturing Pride events bursts with as much color and dynamism as his own life story. Born in Brazil, João has lived in a whole array  countries—Spain, France, England, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Angola, South Africa. He's a real citizen  the globe. This fascinating mix  cultural experiences deeply influences his work and outlook on life.

For nearly two decades, João has made his home in Jackson Heights, Queens. Known  its rich cultural diversity, this neighborhood has given him an even greater appreciation  the medley  cultures that come together during Pride celebrations.

A passion  photos and LGBTQ+ advocacy

As well as being an accomplished interpreter and translator, João pours his heart and soul  photojournalism. He often combines his photography with his advocacy work, particularly when it comes  helping asylum seekers. But his passion really shines through during Pride events, capturing all that joy and sense  community.

In 2023, João didn't have  travel far  snap pictures  the Queens Pride parade—it literally passes by his doorstep  80th Street and 37th Avenue! This proximity gave him a special vantage point  capture every detail  this colorful event.

João sees Queens Pride as "an electric celebration  diverse cultures, one  the year's most thrilling experiences  our community."  him, it goes beyond simple snapshots. It's an emotional expression  joy and authenticity, a "kaleidoscope  color and joy," as he lovingly describes it.

The art  capturing Pride moments

What makes a Pride photograph truly stand out?  João, it's "the gleaming spark in people's eyes, their infectious energy, and their intense desire  be acknowledged and respected." These images are stories themselves, each frame showing "the deepest human craving  connection and validation."

A highlight  his 2023 collection features a Jamaican participant, decked out in rainbow colors with teal lipstick. Her look encapsulates João's vision—shy yet inviting, flirty yet powerful under his gaze. This photo isn't just a celebration  individuality; it conveys a subtle message  solidarity, emphasized by her rainbow Mickey sticker, which hints at Florida's socio-political climate.

Courage and unity in adversity

João has been documenting Queens Pride since 2010.  him, this event symbolizes a celebration  people "free from fear, honored  who they are." He adores this event because it represents "the essential values  respect and acceptance." This year, he points out, feels different—the stakes are higher, challenges more daunting, and yet, their community's determination has never been stronger.

"The LGBTQ+ community has faced countless hurdles," João reflects, "and we'll never let fear constrain us. This year, we'll be fiercer, louder, and more memorable than ever." His thoughts echo  the ongoing fight  equality and capture  spirit  resilience.

In his "Pride in Pictures" project, João invites people from all over  country  share their Pride stories and images. It's a collaboration that not only expands Pride's narrative but also stitches together a quilt  solidarity and shared experiences.

As we anticipate Pride Month 2025, João's work serves as an open invitation  all—engage, reflect, and celebrate what makes our LGBTQ+ community so unique and unyielding. Through his lens, we're reminded  the beauty  diversity and  power  being seen.
