Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana Honor Trans Day of Remembrance Amid Silence from Labour

Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, both former Labour MPs, shared heartfelt messages in recognition of Trans Day of Remembrance, amidst ongoing debates and tensions around trans rights, particularly within their newly established political faction, Your Party. Meanwhile, their former party, Labour, notably refrained from issuing any official statement on the occasion.

Trans Day of Remembrance (TDoR) is solemnly observed each year on November 20. It serves as a poignant moment to remember and mourn members of the transgender community whose lives have been tragically lost due to acts of transphobic violence.

Utilizing social media as their platform, both Corbyn and Sultana expressed their solidarity and support for the trans community with messages that emphasized the importance of trans rights and the need for societal change.

Corbyn posted, "On Trans Day of Remembrance, we mourn those who have lost their lives to transphobic violence, hatred, and discrimination. Trans rights are human rights. Today, let us commit to building a kinder society where everyone can live in peace, dignity, and freedom."

Sultana echoed these sentiments, stating, "Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. We honor the lives tragically taken by transphobic violence and hatred, and we reaffirm our commitment to creating a world where every trans person can live openly, safely, and with the dignity they deserve."

Your Party, co-founded by Corbyn and Sultana, officially launched in July with hopes of providing an alternative political vision. Both Corbyn and Sultana are now serving as independent MPs within this alliance, which includes other independent figures such as Ayoub Khan, Adnan Hussain, Iqbal Mohamed, and Shockat Adam.

The party was initially met with enthusiasm and garnered substantial interest, with reports suggesting that over 800,000 people had signed up for its mailing list by the end of August. However, internal discord quickly surfaced. Sultana accused Corbyn and other male members of fostering a "sexist boys club" atmosphere, and there was criticism from the LGBTQ+ community regarding the party's ambiguous stance on transgender issues.

Controversy further ensued when Adnan Hussain, a Your Party member and MP for Blackburn, made contentious remarks regarding trans women. His comments sparked backlash and prompted further discussion about the party's commitment to trans rights. Hussain, who suggested that trans women are "not biologically women," later announced his departure from Your Party, citing a toxic culture as his reason.

In response to these tensions, Sultana clarified that trans rights are a fundamental component of Your Party's policies and stressed that transphobia would not be tolerated within the group.

While other parties like the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats issued statements to mark Trans Day of Remembrance, Labour, along with several other center-left parties such as the Scottish National Party (SNP), Plaid Cymru, Sinn Féin, the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), and the Alliance Party, chose not to make any public acknowledgments. Unsurprisingly, parties on the right, including the Conservatives, Reform UK, and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), also remained silent.

The Green Party, led by Zack Polanski, a staunch ally of the trans community, expressed their solidarity, stating, "Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we remember the transgender lives lost to violence. The Green Party stands shoulder to shoulder with transgender people in the face of increasing transphobic rhetoric in our society and politics." Polanski also addressed the crowd at a vigil held at London’s Trafalgar Square.

The Liberal Democrats, in their message, reflected on the need for societal change to prevent further loss of life due to transphobic violence. "Today on Trans Day of Remembrance we remember those who have lost their lives to transphobic violence, and reflect on how we as a society can end this loss of life. Liberal Democrats will always stand up for the rights of everyone in the LGBT+ community," their statement read.

Despite the challenges and controversies faced by Your Party, the commitment of Corbyn and Sultana to trans rights remains firm, as evidenced by their public declarations on this solemn day.
