Rutger published: Jasmine Rice: Drag Queen and Opera Singer Making Waves on Britain's Got Talent

Drag queen and opera singer Jasmine Rice LaBeija has achieved a remarkable milestone as the first drag act to reach the finals of Britain’s Got Talent. With her final performance approaching swiftly, she stands on the brink of potentially winning this year's competition.

Known simply as Jasmine Rice on the popular ITV show, she has just one more performance to deliver in Saturday’s grand finale before possibly being crowned the winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2025.

In April, Jasmine captivated the judges—Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden, and Bruno Tonioli—with a powerful rendition of Puccini’s "Nessun dorma." Starting her performance behind a curtain, the reveal of her stunning, self-made baby blue gown caused the audience to erupt in cheers.

From Audition to Golden Buzzer

Fast forward to the semi-finals, where Jasmine delivered a breathtaking performance of Loren Allred's "Never Enough" from The Greatest Showman. This performance compelled Bruno Tonioli to press the coveted Golden Buzzer, catapulting Jasmine straight into the finals.

"This entire journey has been magical," Jasmine shared in an interview. "It's like an impossible dream coming to life." Despite feeling nervous due to hayfever allergies, she is eager to give it her all in the final performance.

A Journey Against the Odds

Jasmine’s journey is one of resilience and passion. The Korean-American performer began her musical education in the fifth grade, eventually becoming a Juilliard-trained operatic tenor. It was during college that she ventured into the world of drag.

Initially, Jasmine kept her two passions separate, but faced rejection from the opera world due to her "femininity" and identity as a queer artist. "I have a very outspoken personality," she explains, "which clashed with the traditional views on opera."

Despite ongoing setbacks, Jasmine found a home in New York’s vibrant queer venues, where she regularly performs free LGBTQ+ opera and variety shows. Her performances continue to captivate audiences, earning her the title of International Godmother of The House of LaBeija.

Changing Minds and Breaking Barriers

After her audition on Britain's Got Talent, Simon Cowell praised Jasmine for her incredible talent, even calling out the "idiots" in the opera world who failed to recognize her brilliance. "If I can win over Simon," Jasmine notes, "then there's no challenge too big."

Jasmine’s presence on Britain’s Got Talent challenges misconceptions about drag, emphasizing that not all drag performances are inappropriate for families. "Drag has always been a part of theatre and art," she states, referencing historical examples of men performing female roles.

Despite some negative headlines, Jasmine remains positive. "There are performers who are more risqué, but many of us simply love performing. If people enjoyed Mrs. Doubtfire, they shouldn't have a problem with me singing in a gown."

Inspiring the Next Generation

Jasmine’s performances have inspired many, with families reaching out to express gratitude for her visibility and representation. "I thought I was doing this for myself, but I’ve connected with so many people around the world," she smiles.

If she wins, Jasmine will perform at the Royal Variety Performance in front of King Charles. "A queen in front of a king," she jokes, illustrating her humor and confidence.

No matter the outcome of the final, Jasmine feels victorious every day since her first audition. "Winning isn’t just about the title," she reflects. "It’s about the journey and the joy of performing."

The Britain’s Got Talent final airs on 31 May 2025. Join the conversation and celebrate Jasmine’s incredible journey!
