The entertainment industry is witnessing a significant moment as the acclaimed nonbinary actor known for playing Casey Gardner on Netflix’s Atypical announces a personal transformation. The actor, formerly recognized under a different name, has embraced the name Jack Haven. This change marks a significant step in their journey of self-identification, and Haven's announcement has resonated deeply with fans and the LGBTQ+ community at large.
Jack Haven, celebrated for their compelling performance in the 2023 film I Saw the TV Glow, shared this personal update on Instagram on January 20. The actor revealed their new surname was chosen as a tribute to their great-great uncle, Haven Gillespie, the legendary composer behind the timeless holiday song “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town.” The choice of this new identity is laden with personal significance and history.
In their heartfelt post, Jack expressed that the first name "Jack" had naturally become a part of their identity over the past two years. This transformation began during a workshop with Iranian actor and director Saman Arastoo. "I was encouraged to use the name in safe spaces," Jack recounted. "But Saman challenged me to use it in spaces that felt less secure. Hence, the name Jack found a place in my life, even in places like the men's bathroom, symbolizing courage and authenticity."
Jack's announcement coincides with exciting developments in their career. They previously released the track "Open Urself" under their new moniker, signaling an artistic evolution that complements their personal one. Jack's rise in the film industry has been marked by diverse roles in films such as Woody Allen’s Irrational Man (2015), Alexander Payne’s Downsizing (2017), and alongside stars like Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Brie Larson, Naomi Watts, and Woody Harrelson in The Glass Castle (2017).
In addition to their notable work in Atypical, Jack's performance in I Saw the TV Glow has earned them critical acclaim and a slew of nominations. Directed by the talented transfeminine, nonbinary filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun, the film received laudations, particularly for Jack's role, earning them a Gotham Awards nomination for Outstanding Supporting Performance and an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Performance. These recognitions underscore Jack’s compelling artistry and ability to connect with audiences through authentic storytelling.
Earlier this month, GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics announced the nominees for its 2025 Dorian Film Awards. I Saw the TV Glow leads with nine nominations, including Film of the Year. Jack Haven received nominations for Supporting Film Performance of the Year and the "We’re Wilde About You!" Rising Star Award, reflecting their growing influence and talent within the industry. Notably, these awards do not categorize performance nominations by gender, a progressive approach that aligns with Jack’s personal identity.
Jack, who publicly came out as queer in 2018 and as nonbinary in a since-deleted 2019 Instagram post, continues to break boundaries. "I've always felt a bit of everything – part boy, part girl, and part neither," Jack previously shared. "Using they/them pronouns feels right." Their journey is a testament to embracing one's true self in both personal and professional spheres.
Jack Haven's story is not just about a name change; it is about embracing authenticity, honoring one's heritage, and courageously facing the world as oneself. As Jack continues to forge a path in the entertainment industry, their influence extends beyond acting, serving as an inspiration for many who navigate complex identities. Fans and supporters can look forward to more groundbreaking work from this remarkable talent who continues to redefine what it means to be seen and heard in Hollywood.
