Rutger published: J.K. Rowling Celebrates Controversial Supreme Court Ruling with Donation

J.K. Rowling recently celebrated a contentious ruling by the UK Supreme Court, which determined that the legal definition of "woman" excludes transgender women. The renowned author also confirmed her financial support for the gender-critical group that spearheaded the legal case leading to this decision.

In a social media post on April 16, 2025, Rowling shared an image of two glasses with a celebratory caption describing the day as "TERF VE Day." The term "TERF," an acronym for "Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist," is frequently associated with Rowling due to her outspoken views on gender identity and women's rights. In her post, she toasted the organization For Women Scotland (@ForWomenScot), thanking them for their efforts and mentioning her husband, Neil Murray, in the context of the occasion.

VE Day, which stands for Victory in Europe Day, is commemorated annually on May 8 to mark the end of World War II in Europe. Rowling's use of the term "TERF VE Day" in this context has sparked discussions across social media platforms.

Rowling's Financial Support Revealed

Alongside her celebratory posts, Rowling also addressed questions regarding her financial contributions to the case. When asked why mainstream media was not reporting on who had funded For Women Scotland’s legal challenge, Rowling responded by confirming her donation. Contradicting a mistaken identity, Rowling clarified, "HK Rowling has never given @ForWomenScot money. JK definitely has." In February 2024, a significant donation of £70,000 was made to a crowdfunding campaign for the organization under the name "JK," accompanied by a supportive message acknowledging the group’s efforts.

For Women Scotland, a self-described "grassroots women's group," has been at the center of this legal battle against the Scottish government, challenging a previous ruling that sex is not limited to biological definitions. The case initiated as the Scottish government sought to amend the Gender Recognition Act to include transgender women with and without Gender Recognition Certificates (GRCs) under the definition of "woman."

Supreme Court's Ruling and Its Implications

The UK Supreme Court's decision, handed down by five justices, ruled that the terms "woman" and "sex" in the Equality Act 2010 refer specifically to biological women and biological sex. Lord Hodge, the deputy president of the Supreme Court, emphasized that while this definition is based on biological sex, trans individuals remain protected under the Equality Act against discrimination.

This ruling could have far-reaching consequences for transgender and non-binary individuals throughout the UK, particularly concerning access to single-sex spaces, such as hospital wards, bathrooms, and shelters. Many fear that the ruling may open doors to increased discrimination and abuse, setting a precedent for further restrictions on the rights of the transgender community.

LGBTQ+ charities and activists have expressed grave concerns over the ruling's implications. The Scottish government, having lost the case, is collaborating with the UK government to fully understand the ramifications of this decision.

Response from the Community

The ruling has prompted reactions from prominent UK trans activists and artists, including Munroe Bergdorf, Juno Dawson, and Shon Faye, who have voiced their opposition. Additionally, several cisgender celebrities, such as Aimee Lou Wood, Charithra Chandran, and Jade Thirlwall, have publicly expressed their solidarity with the trans community.

In support of trans rights, Doctor Who star Nicola Coughlan announced on Instagram that she would be matching donations up to £10,000 for the UK trans charity Not A Phase in response to the ruling.

The controversy surrounding the ruling and Rowling's involvement has led to calls from trans allies to boycott Harry Potter-themed content as a means of protest against Rowling’s support for the Supreme Court decision.
