A disturbing incident has left York, Pennsylvania, reeling after several LGBTQ individuals reported that they were attacked due in an anti-LGBTQ hate incident late last week. Local sources say it happened on Friday, August 22, near a popular venue in town.>
York City Police Commissioner Michael Muldrow has confirmed that a detailed investigation has been launched. The incident took place near York County Judicial Center, with victims saying they were harassed and assaulted by a group they first encountered at Gift Horse Brewing Company.>
Brady Pappas, one victim, took his story public, sharing a harrowing account on social media. In his post, Pappas detailed how he and two friends were subjected insult and verbal abuse while they were in an outdoor beer garden. The group allegedly threw slurs and derogatory comments at them.>
Feeling unsafe, Pappas and his friends decided it was best leave. Unfortunately, things only got worse.>
Pappas recounted, "The group followed us out, crossed traffic, and surrounded us on a sidewalk. They shouted things like, 'If you want dress like women, act like women.' It was obvious their goal was intimidation, and all while staff and bystanders just watched.">
He describes how things turned physical when one aggressor allegedly pursued them and attacked his friend Vayne. Despite Vayne's attempts at de-escalation, insisting they didn't want a fight, it wasn't enough. The situation escalated quickly.>
"Vayne was using their book bag as a barrier, but was overpowered," Pappas wrote. "The attacker put Vayne in a chokehold, causing them lose consciousness and experience seizures.">
Pappas described his panic as he tried helping Vayne and stopping this attack. Thankfully, a Gift Horse Brewing Company employee stepped in, restraining Vayne's attacker until police finally arrived.>
Pappas expressed deep gratitude toward community members who showed their support during this frightening time. "I'm incredibly thankful those who comforted us. They were from our queer and ally community, recognized us, and stepped in," he shared.>
However, Pappas was disappointed with how police initially responded, feeling they downplayed what happened. Despite its severity, both Vayne and their attacker ended up facing disorderly conduct charges.>
"This was clearly an act hatred," Pappas emphasized, asserting that Vayne was only acting in self-defense.>
In response public concern, Commissioner Muldrow assured everyone that this incident isn't being taken lightly. "Any case involving 'hate-fueled violence' gets top priority," he stated. "We're committed thorough review, working with other authorities ensure proper charges are made.">
The police department has rolled out several measures, like contacting Human Relations Commission and deploying a "Trauma Responder" support victims. The ongoing investigation aims gather every piece evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements, in pursuit justice.>
