For the past three years, our Queer State of the Union series has brought together LGBTQ+ leaders, including elected officials, activists, and artists, to have candid discussions about pressing issues and the way forward. This year's edition is no exception, as these leaders offer insights and calls to action for continuing the fight for equality and hope.
Moving Forward with Purpose
Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) emphasizes the importance of moving past anger and grief to take actionable steps forward. He describes the search for a "Republican with a conscience," contrasting it with figures like Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), who has actively campaigned against transgender rights. He advocates for truth-telling and collective action to ensure the survival and thriving of marginalized communities. "We have better odds when we unite and work together," Johns asserts.

Sydney Duncan, senior counsel for Advocates for Trans Equality, anticipates intensified legislative attacks on trans rights. Despite the challenges, Duncan remains hopeful about the potential for public opinion to shift in favor of trans people. "Every day, trans individuals live authentically, offering hope and inspiration," Duncan shares.
