Rutger published: Incident Involving Retired Police Captain and Traffic Officer Sparks Controversy

A recent run-in between a retired police captain and a traffic officer has stirred quite a bit up in Nevada, calling attention and demanding accountability from law enforcement. William Scott Jr., who's known in law enforcement circles not just as a respected former officer but also as an educator on LGBTQ+ sensitivity and community policing, found himself in a tense confrontation with a Las Vegas Metro police officer during a traffic stop.

The traffic stop showdown

It all went down on August 18 when 62-year-old Scott was pulled over by a Metro police traffic officer. The reason? Using his phone while driving. Publicly requested records show Scott was ticketed, with bodycam footage documenting every detail. In an attempt at explanation, Scott said, “I thought you could use your speakerphone.” The officer replied, “OK, you can't have it in your hand, though,” and asked Scott once more: "Can I see your ID?" Scott, driving a state-owned vehicle at that moment, identified himself as both a retired Metro police captain and current chief investigator at Nevada's Attorney General's Office.

The officer's remark, “Okay, then you know, right?” seemed like it rubbed Scott wrong. Agitated, Scott accused him, “So maybe I just call Kevin and just tell Kevin you're giving me a hard time because — I'm telling you, I didn't know, dude.” Attempting leverage, Scott hinted he'd reach out through back channels, adding more fuel.

Things heat up with a badge flash

Scott, asked repeatedly not leave his car, got out anyway, adding tension. The officer stayed cool even as Scott tried dropping names and flaunting his position. Eventually, after getting his citation, Scott flashed his badge, saying, “There you go. Right there, buddy,” met with “OK, yeah, should have just led with that.” Scott quickly erupted again, spewing insults and slurs.

Things hit a new low when Scott threw out a homophobic slur: “Bye, I have enough money, fa**ot.” The officer replied, dripping sarcasm, “OK. Very classy. I'm so glad that you're retired and not with Metro anymore,” clearly unimpressed with Scott's behavior.

Community outrage and demands

The Las Vegas Police Protective Association didn't hold back, calling Scott's actions “extremely hard” even “to comprehend,” and outright demanded an apology and internal probe by Attorney General Aaron Ford's office.

Responding fast, AG's office denounced Scott's behavior, all about respect and anti-discrimination. They confirmed an investigation's on, determining Scott's fate ahead. “Chief Scott has expressed sincere remorse and apologizes," their statement read.

The drama highlights a bigger need: Accountability and respect, especially from leaders. It's ignited larger conversations about behavior and how best law enforcement should move forward.

The outcome from AG's office? Still in progress, but a solid reminder there are still bridges between law enforcement and community, built on mutual trust. Let's see how they get there.
