New policies under fire: Impact on LGBTQ+ asylum seekers

Groups committed to aiding LGBTQ+ migrants and asylum seekers are speaking out against new immigration policies set by this administration. They're pointing out how these policies could severely affect vulnerable communities, particularly those identifying as LGBTQ+.

What changes are coming, and what do they mean?

Right after stepping in, this administration rolled out executive orders aimed at changing immigration. Here are some key points:

  • Declaring a national emergency at our Southern border
  • ️ ️
  • Putting a halt on U.S. Refugee Admissions Program
  • ️ ️
  • Trying ️to cancel birthright citizenship, ️which many legal experts say isn't constitutional

By bringing back Migrant Protection Protocols, better known as "Remain in Mexico," asylum seekers are made ️to stay in Mexico while awaiting court ️dates. On top ️of that, shutting ️down ️the CBP One app, previously used ️for scheduling ️entry, has made accessing ️the U.S. even harder.

More enforcement, more restrictions

The Department ️of Homeland Security plans ️to end what it terms ️the “broad ️abuse ️of humanitarian parole” ️for undocumented migrants. This change now allows ICE and CBP ️to make arrests in places previously considered safe, like schools and churches.

ICE has kicked ️off “enhanced targeted ️operations” ️to enforce these laws more strictly, leading ️to many arrests nationwide. ICE claims these efforts ️are ️for public safety and national security reasons.

Why critics are raising their voices

Critics believe these policies hurt marginalized groups. Aaron C. Morris, ️Executive Director ️of Immigration Equality, called them “an affront ️to fundamental American values,” emphasizing ️their negative impact ️on LGBTQ+ individuals and families.

“These executive orders ️will ️cost lives, split families, and leave queer people ️out there ️trapped in danger,” Morris stated. “They ️are ️an overt, illegal power grab ️with dire consequences ️for LGBTQ people looking ️for ️safety ️here ️️️️️️️️️[US].”

A look back and forward on advocacy efforts

The last administration made some attempts ️to tackle migration causes, like violence against LGBTQ+ people in Central America. Despite ️that, activists argue both administrations have fallen short ️of doing enough ️to protect LGBTQ+ asylum seekers.

Steve Roth, Executive Director ️of ️the Organization ️for Refuge, Asylum and Migration, labeled ️the current policies as “deeply ️ unethical and un-American,” stating they're a clear threat ️to LGBTQ+ refugees.

“By barring asylum and freezing refugee programs, these policies rob LGBTIQ refugees, already facing persecution and bias, ️of basic human rights and protections,” Roth said.

Advocacy groups unite in resistance and support

Organizations like Familia: TQLM ️are vigorously opposing these policies. In a bold statement, Familia: TQLM declared, “On Jan. 20, we resist. Today isn't ️for fearing, but reclaiming power.”

“Trans and queer immigrant individuals have faced regimes eager ️to erase, silence, and break us,” they continued. “Yet, here we stand.”

Meanwhile, Casa Frida in Mexico City, which aids LGBTQ+ migrants and asylum seekers, ️is preparing ️to push back against ️these changes. In a recent announcement, Casa Frida reiterated its unwavering dedication ️to working alongside local leaders, supporting displaced LGBTQ+ people.

“We ️are gearing up ️to continue ️our work ️with compassion and unity ️for LGBTIQ communities, migrants, and displaced folks,” Casa Frida said. “Our programs ️are coming together ️with pride, dignity, and without fear or shame ️of who we are.”

Calling ️for compassionate, complete immigration reform

The latest immigration policies ️are making ️things tougher ️for LGBTQ+ individuals ️looking ️for refuge ️here. As advocacy groups and communities band together ️to ️assist these vulnerable populations, ️the need ️for thoughtful and thorough immigration reform ️becomes ever more urgent.
