On November 4, Erica Deuso made history by becoming the first openly transgender mayor-elect in Pennsylvania. Winning nearly 65% of the vote, Deuso’s victory marks a significant milestone in inclusive political campaigns. She achieved this through her "good neighbor" campaign, focusing on local issues rather than her gender identity.
In this interview, Erica Deuso shares her journey and the strategies behind her successful campaign.
"It was a very long day," Deuso recalls, "but we were thrilled to see the results. It was a clean sweep here in Chester County." She describes feeling overwhelmed by the attention and requests for interviews after her win. "I knew the historic significance but underestimated the reaction. I’m grateful and ready to serve."
For Deuso, her gender identity was not at the forefront of her campaign. "I’m a scientist and community leader," she says. "I ran on issues like traffic, housing, and public safety, not on my gender identity. I hoped Downingtown would focus on these issues too."
Downingtown is a small town with a "good neighbor" spirit. Deuso emphasizes the community's support, from helping families in need to rallying for residents during crises.
Deuso’s campaign slogan, "good neighbor," was inspired by her experiences after moving to Downingtown in 2007, before her transition. "I was scared of what people would think," she admits, but was met with love and support. "My campaign was about giving back to a community that welcomed me," she explains.
Deuso’s communication strategy involved humor and addressing local concerns. "Humor can disarm people," she says, sharing an instance where a light-hearted joke opened dialogue with a hesitant voter.
Deuso faced challenges from opponents who tried to make her campaign about her gender. "They wanted to bring hate and division," she notes. "But focusing on real issues like public safety and flooding resonated more with voters." She believes this approach reflects broader trends, with voters prioritizing issues over divisive rhetoric.
Deuso’s path to self-realization began at age four. "I knew early on but lacked the language and support," she recalls. After years of internal struggle, she transitioned at 29 with the support of a therapist.
"I didn’t want to turn 30 without knowing who I truly am," she shares. Her journey included amicable divorce and finding happiness in her identity and role as a community leader.
As mayor, Deuso plans to focus on accountability and accessibility, introducing office hours for community engagement. Despite initial concerns about safety, she remains committed to serving her community.
"I’m grateful for the responsibility entrusted to me," she says. "I won’t let my constituents down."
Deuso also hopes to inspire others. Her message to young people: "Live authentically and persevere. You’re capable of more than you realize."
With an open door policy, Erica Deuso stands ready to lead Downingtown with integrity and dedication.
