Rutger published: How Bold Transgender Leadership Can Forge Progress

This article dives deep with writer Faefyx Collington's thoughts on why trans politicians and their allies are so essential in pushing LGBTQ+ rights forward.

Being gender non-conforming myself, I share a passion with Collington when it comes down it our community's well-being. But when they mention that trans folks need allies—even if they're not perfect—I can't help but wonder if this mindset ends up holding us back more than it helps.

Questioning a gentle game plan

Take, say, Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE). She's made history as a transgender person in federal office, but sometimes her stance seems too soft. She's brushed off transgender issues as "distractions" beside larger economic topics. Sure, centrists might nod in agreement, but where's proof that this actually works? Collington praises similar approaches in Utah and Montana, but let's face it, real wins there happened because people were upfront and direct, not dodgy.

Busting myths with assertive action

Look at Utah's H.B. 11 veto—the bill aimed at blocking transgender girls from sports. This was a clear win, thanks not just hope but fiery advocacy from Equality Utah and figures like state senator Derek Kitchen and Sahara Hayes. These leaders went hard, proving that when you push firmly, you make strides instead relying on passive tactics.

Montana's bold moves in leadership

Just check Montana. State reps SJ Howell and Zooey Zephyr took on transphobia headfirst from their 2022 elections onward. They showed vulnerability and strength by sharing their stories and facing backlash, like Zephyr's censure, yet still getting reelected with respect across party lines. Their story's a testament: being direct can sway opinions and shift policies, no matter where you're at politically.

The downside when compromise goes too far

There's this tendency lately, among Democrats especially, where support feels lukewarm. Look at Kamala Harris's campaign—she used stand strong on trans rights but shifted focus. This sidestep left room opponents, making it seem like Democrats are over-fixated on these issues, pushing away some voters in process.

Why bold advocacy matters

Despite hurdles, leaders like Howell and Zephyr in Montana prove significant wins are possible. Their guts and drive have not only protected trans rights, but they've also built bridges across political spectrums. Their example shows us that courage and being true count, bringing about meaningful change.

As we look ahead, let's not forget lessons from icons like Sojourner Truth and Harvey Milk. They remind us that rights aren't served on a silver platter; they're seized through relentless demand and bold action. Inspired by those who came before, we must keep claiming our rights and space.

Stephanie Wade, living out in Seal Beach, California, has worn many hats as a transgender woman. She's served in Marine Corps infantry and as a congressional aide, all while fighting tirelessly equality. Now, she co-leads Lavender Democrats in Orange County and sits on Equality California's board. The views here are hers alone.
