There's something wonderfully exciting brewing in San Francisco's lively Castro District, a place known far and wide as a hub with deep LGBTQ+ roots. Breaking new ground, a new spot called Rikki's, a lesbian-themed sports bar, will soon open its doors. It marks a significant return, being one-of-a-kind in this iconic neighborhood after many years without such a space.
The brains and heart behind this venture belong, fittingly, in this community. Queer entrepreneurs Sara Yergovich and Danielle Thoe are transforming what used be Copas, a cherished Mexican restaurant that closed in 2024, in something new and needed. Rikki's will be a place where women and sports fans alike can find a home. Named after Rikki Streicher, a legendary LGBTQ+ rights advocate, Rikki's aims not only honor but embolden her legacy by promoting inclusivity and community spirit.
Rikki's was born from a very personal place. Yergovich and Thoe, who have been friends forever and are active in LGBTQ+ scenes, found themselves yearning a dedicated space in San Francisco that champions women's sports. Tired and a little frustrated with sports bars that seemed stuck on just showing men's games or didn't even have channels capable, they got inspired. They decided it was time things changed.
Danielle Thoe shared, "It all started because we struggled with finding bars that would show women's sports. You'd go there, and they'd either not want show them or just couldn't. But women's sports are on rise, and we believed fans like us needed a place where we could truly enjoy these games together."
At its heart on bustling Market Street, Rikki's isn't just another bar. It's set become a vital space in LGBTQ+ circles, much like Hi-Tops, a beloved gay-owned sports bar that made waves when it opened 2012. But Rikki's offers something fresh by focusing on women and their incredible roles in sports. It aims expand on Hi-Tops' legacy, offering a unique touch that's all its own.
Yergovich and Thoe don't want Rikki's be just bricks and mortar. They envision it as a lively community hub where inclusivity reigns. It will be a place that celebrates sports while fostering a strong sense togetherness and pride. It's about cheering on women's achievements in sports and beyond.
As they gear up open their doors, likely by May or June 2025, Yergovich and Thoe are reaching out community, seeking their backing and excitement. They're gathering funds and support, making Rikki's journey as communal as its purpose. It's not just a bar they're building, but a true community space created and supported by those it will serve.
There's a buzz in air about Rikki's opening. It's poised shake up Castro District history, carrying forward an enduring mission progress and inclusivity. It's here will enrich local scene and place women's sports center stage. Fans and allies from all over are sure hear and feel its call.
Rikki's story isn't merely about opening new bar. It's about passion, grit, collaboration. As Yergovich and Thoe gear up welcome everyone, they hope Rikki's stands as a powerful symbol in ongoing pursuit equality and representation, not just in sports but everyday life.
Keep your eyes peeled as we eagerly await Rikki's grand opening—a place where sports, community, and inclusivity meet perfectly.
