A recent study funded by Stonewall, a well-known LGBTQ+ charity, has shone a spotlight on some seriously concerning practices still happening in Britain. We're talking about conversion therapy here—methods meant, quite harmfully, I might add, to change someone's gender identity or sexual orientation. Shockingly, these practices are still legal in Britain, leaving LGBTQ+ folks vulnerable.
Conversion therapy isn't just misguided; it's downright harmful. We're talking about abusive tactics that attempt—and fail—to alter who a person truly loves or how they identify. Techniques can range from emotional abuse and coercive prayer sessions that masquerade as "healing" rituals, all with a layer as thin as a pretenser, to physical and even sexual abuse. Despite widespread outcry from health professionals, these practices persist in alarming silence.
Back in 2018, when Theresa May was in charge, there was a promise made—a pledge, really—to ban these practices in a broader push towards trans-inclusive reforms. Fast forward years down, and we're still waiting. The Labour Party has reiterated its promise, fresh from electoral victory, vowing again that they'll put an end these harmful practices. It's an issue whose urgency can't be overstated.
The study found some unsettling stats: about 31% percent—nearly one-third!—of LGBTQ+ individuals surveyed have encountered attempts at converting their identities. Even more disturbing? Around 20% faced physical abuse or were forced through coercive prayer rituals under this so-called therapy.
Roughly 10% reported being subjected, unwillingly, to pseudo-scientific counseling, while another 10% were victims either sexual violence or exorcisms. And get this—some were even pressured with threats like homelessness if they refused.
It's particularly rough on transgender and non-binary folks, with 38% reporting physical violence. The same percentage detailed how they were shunned by their families, friends, or community.
Matthew, who has lived through this nightmare, shared how deep it cuts. "They make you question your core, your very self," he said, "The toll on mental health—I'm talking anxiety, solitude, depression—is something nobody should have forced upon them. Right now, as anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment grows, it's high time our government steps up and stops this abuse."
Simon Blake, who heads up Stonewall, seconded that, “Every day these practices are allowed, they keep hurting our community, jeopardizing lives. It's staggering how frequent these situations are, hidden from mainstream sight."
Blake stressed that it's urgent. "Behind every statistic, there are real people who've been told they're broken, that they need ‘fixing'. The UK needs a bill that covers everyone, leaving perpetrators no excuse while ensuring justice."
This ban isn't just about individual protection; it's about reasserting UK's standing as a champion in LGBTQ+ rights. We've seen a worrisome slide from having been first in Europe down a steep hill. "We must aim higher," Blake declared confidently.
As this legislation hangs in balance, those who've felt conversion therapy's harsh hand are asking—no, imploring—for quick action. People deserve safety and respect, and it starts with a law that shows empathy and firmness.
