In Austin, Texas, a touching story unfolded involving a brave man who defended a trans woman from violent threats, leading him straight from heroism on a sunny day at Barton Springs Pool, right through hospital doors. This tale not only highlights his courage but also reveals how a community came together with remarkable generosity.
On a bright July day, 33-year-old Jarod Adkison, a construction worker and cycling enthusiast, decided it was a perfect time off after cycling around Lady Bird Lake. Enjoying his day at Barton Springs Pool, he stumbled upon a situation that would sharply shift his day. While chatting with a group, things took a turn as a few men began harassing one woman in particular, who was trans, with vile insults.
Suddenly, that tranquility was shattered when three heavily intoxicated men started spewing hateful comments and then became physically aggressive. Watching them assault two women, throwing them down, Adkison's sense against injustice burst forth.
"I tried stepping in, urging them calmly just move on," Adkison remembered. "Then one hit me a few times. I wasn't trying looking trouble." But as things sometimes go when tensions are high, those good intentions turned violent quickly. Adkison ended up hit so hard he lost consciousness, him lying injured on that poolside.
Rushed over Dell Seton Medical Center, doctors soon unveiled just how bad his injuries really were. A cracked jaw, a concussion, making matters worse, a splinter off his jawbone had jammed right there in his ear canal, now filled blood.
As if things weren't challenging enough, with no insurance and earning slightly over Medicaid limits, Adkison was staring down a huge financial hurdle, being off work on unpaid leave only added pressure.
Moved by his plight, his parents kicked off a fundraising effort, aiming help cover those medical debts and everyday costs as he healed. What happened? The community rallied, raising more than $74,000. Adkison, although unsure at first how he felt taking this help, was overwhelmed and deeply touched by kindness from friends, family, even complete strangers.
Despite generosity, raised funds didn't quite cover all surgery expenses. Yet, here's where Dr. CJ Langevin, Wellspring Plastic Surgery, offered a lifeline. Performing necessary jaw reconstruction at a reduced fee - just operating suite costs, a mere $1,400.
Surgery started August, with Adkison's jaw wired shut, aiding healing. By October, under Dr. Langevin's care, he was fully recovered. "An outstanding patient," Dr. Langevin noted, describing how minor procedure actually was.
Not stopping there, legal steps followed this attack. Two attackers, Joshua McKeith Bell and Matthew Robert Villanueva, aged 28 and 29, stood charged aggravated assault. Despite everything, Adkison didn't hold grudges, emphasizing rather accountability's importance. "No bad feelings," he remarked, "but hitting people, putting them hospital, that can't stand."
Reflecting on it all, Adkison remained convinced he chose right. "Thought hard, realized, I'd do it again," he shared candidly. "Leaving them without help would've felt wrong." His actions remind us one person's courage indeed makes a difference, showing what communities can achieve when rallying around justice, and healing.
