At just 21, British singer-songwriter Henry Moodie has released his debut album, "mood swings," a work that has offered him profound insights into his own identity. "It has helped me understand myself on a deeper level," Moodie explains, reflecting on the authentic songwriting that characterizes the album.

Songwriting has always been Moodie's refuge. Growing up in Surrey, he turned to music as a form of therapy to cope with relentless bullying during school. "It was my way of processing everything," he recalls.

Three years ago, at only 18, Moodie experienced a breakthrough with his debut song "you were there for me." The track, promoted on TikTok, resonated widely and became a UK top 40 hit, amassing over 120 million streams on Spotify. This success catapulted him into the limelight, leading to a record deal and a fanbase eagerly anticipating his debut album.

In "mood swings," Moodie delves into themes of coming-of-age relationships, complex situationships, and unspoken emotions. Through the process of writing the album, he discovered more about himself, his influences from other LGBTQ+ musicians, and how a pivotal queer relationship in his teens shaped him profoundly.

Navigating TikTok and Finding Artistic Authenticity

"TikTok is an incredibly powerful platform," Moodie admits. "It's still something I'm navigating, but it's been crucial for my career." He appreciates the opportunities it has afforded him, from promoting his music to securing a record deal. However, he's mindful of not becoming pigeonholed as a 'TikTok singer.' "My dream is to branch out and establish myself as a 'proper' artist," he says.

Initially, Moodie felt the pressure to chase viral sensations, but he has since shifted his focus. "I realized the importance of growing a dedicated fanbase," he shares. "It's more fulfilling to connect genuinely with people who care about my music than to chase numbers and viral moments."

Music as Therapy and Self-Discovery

Reflecting on his school years, Moodie describes music as his sanctuary. "I didn't fit in and was bullied, but music was my escape," he says. Songwriting remains his greatest passion, helping him process emotions and understand himself more deeply. "With this album, I've reconnected with that love for songwriting," Moodie reveals.

His album "mood swings" features a track called "Cigarette," which tells the story of his first relationship with a boy at 16. This significant experience was challenging to write about, but Moodie finally found the courage to express it. "It was a closeted relationship, complex and impactful," he explains. "I'm excited to share it with the world."

Embracing Queer Identity and Representation

The influence of other LGBTQ+ artists has been profound for Moodie. "Seeing people like Conan Gray and Troye Sivan being open about their sexuality is empowering," he notes. Social media has offered a platform where he and others can find community and expression. "Music reflects who you are, and it's special to see so many diverse queer artists today," Moodie adds.

In his music video for "Closure," Moodie featured a queer relationship with transgender actress Bel Priestley. "Bel is incredible," he says. "I wanted to highlight a trans relationship because trans people face so much adversity, yet they're such a vital part of our community." He stresses the importance of visibility and support for the trans community during difficult times.

Henry Moodie's debut album "mood swings" is set to release on 24 October, capturing his journey of self-discovery and artistic growth. He hopes it resonates with listeners and encourages them to embrace their authentic selves.
