Imagine someone calling you "the Stanley Tucci" where you're from. That's exactly what happened with Coinneach MacLeod, better known as "the Hebridean Baker." He's wearing that title with pride, and he's not just a baker anymore—he's also showcasing his talents on TV. In his new series, *Hebridean Baker - Nordic Islands*, he takes us on an incredible trip through Nordic island cultures and cuisines.
This series feels like a wanderlust dream come true, whisking us away through Norway's breathtaking Lofoten, exploring hidden gems in Denmark's Bornholm, and sipping coffee in Sweden's Gotland. MacLeod, in his signature cozy Fair-Isle sweaters and those unmistakable yellow wellies, dives deep, sampling everything from delicate Danish pastries all through shocky fermented sheep's heads. According To MacLeod, "The thread that ties it all together are these islands," as he shares glimpses from each unique corner he visits.
In each 45-minute episode, MacLeod takes us right alongside him, meeting local folks and uncovering their stories. He reflects, "It's not just about food—it goes deeper, exploring culture, people, and how being from an island shapes you." You can't help but feel a sense that these island communities mirror his own Hebridean roots, nestled closer geographically, and perhaps in spirit, right by Iceland.
Taking a trip down memory lane, MacLeod remembers growing up in Hebrides, feeling a bit out-of-place. It's a sentiment others from small islands might recognize. During his Nordic travels, he meets kindred spirits—people like a fisherman's daughter who's driven by wanderlust yet finds her heart tethered back home. "I felt exactly like that," he admits, recalling his own urge both leave and then return. The Gaelic word *cianalas* captures this perfectly—a longing, a calling back—and it strikes a chord during his chats with fellow islanders.
What sets *Nordic Islands* apart? It's bilingual! Filming in both English and Gaelic, MacLeod's native tongue, it brings a unique flare. With 70,000 Gaelic speakers in Scotland, MacLeod hopes this narrative stirs up an interest in Gaelic and encourages more folks over To Hebrides. "I hope it's like a comforting blanket," he muses. Of course, switching between languages wasn't without its hiccups—imagine multiple takes with something notorious like fermented sheep's heads. "You've gotta eat four!" he laughs.
Filming stirred up childhood memories—waiting on a quayside, with boats in view, yet knowing he belonged on a different path. "I couldn't think Of anything worse," he says about fishing, remembering tears on boats. His journey through life took him all The Way To Russia, where he bravely came out in a challenging climate. Yet, he found his niche within Eurovision's colorful, accepting embrace. "What gay man wouldn't want a week at Eurovision?" he jokes. Through sharing his life—his partner Paul, his proud identity—MacLeod hopes others feel empowered, be they 15 or 65. "If sharing my story helps even a wee bit, it matters," he states.

MacLeod invites us along his colorful escapades, a cheerful exploration blending food, culture, and personal insight.
