In a recent development, the creators of the popular video game franchise Halo have publicly criticized the United States government for an inflammatory social media post that likened immigrants to the parasitic alien race known as The Flood from the Halo series.
The controversy began when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) posted a message on X/Twitter on Monday, October 27, 2025. The post urged citizens to "help destroy the flood," accompanied by an image from the game Halo: Combat Evolved, featuring the series' hero, Master Chief, driving a Warthog. The accompanying text, "Destroy the Flood," was linked to the Immigration & Customs Enforcement's (ICE) sign-up page, prompting widespread backlash.
The Flood are portrayed in the Halo series as a formidable and consuming force, bent on assimilating all life forms into their alien collective. In the narrative, this alien race poses an existential threat to life in the galaxy, compelling the ancient Forerunners to create superweapons known as Halos, which can eradicate all sentient life.
In a related incident, the White House's official X/Twitter account responded to a post by GameStop, which humorously declared an end to the "console wars." The White House shared an AI-generated image of President Donald Trump in Master Chief's armor, saluting the US flag with the caption, "Power to the players." This image further fueled the controversy surrounding the inappropriate use of Halo's imagery.
Veteran developers from the Halo franchise have expressed their disapproval of these government posts. Marcus Lehto, co-creator of the Halo series, described the government's actions as "absolutely abhorrent." In a statement to Game File, Lehto expressed his disgust, saying, "It really makes me sick seeing Halo co-opted like this."
Jaime Griesemer, a senior video game designer at Bundie Studios, the original developers behind Halo, shared his shock and disappointment. He stated, "Halo is a cultural icon, and like anything with cultural capital, it is going to be used by politicians and brands looking for relevancy. However, using Halo imagery in a call to 'destroy' people because of their immigration status goes way too far and ought to offend every Halo fan, regardless of political orientation."
Griesemer further emphasized, "I personally find it despicable. The Flood are evil space zombie parasites and are not an allegory to any group of people."
Since Donald Trump's inauguration in January, ICE has increased its aggressive anti-immigration enforcement tactics. This department has become one of the most well-funded in the US government over the past year. As of September 2025, TRAC Immigration reports that at least 59,762 individuals are held in ICE detention, with more than 71% of them lacking any criminal convictions.
Despite this disturbing use of imagery, the Halo series continues to promote inclusivity and awareness of marginalized communities through its latest installment, Halo Infinite. The game regularly features events that honor various groups, and developers have introduced cosmetic items such as armor coatings to celebrate Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Asian & Pacific Islander Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Pride Month, and more.
The actions by the DHS and the White House have sparked a broader conversation about the appropriation of cultural icons for political purposes. Many fans and creators are urging for a more responsible and respectful use of popular media and its symbols.
As the discussion continues, it remains to be seen how these events will impact the relationship between the government and communities that find value and representation in cultural phenomena like Halo.
