Renowned Olympic medalist and openly gay professional skier, Gus Kenworthy, has recently caught the public’s attention with his announcement of vying for a spot in the 2026 Winter Olympics. With a career spanning three Olympics, Kenworthy’s aspiration has stirred excitement across the sporting world.
Beyond his skiing ambitions, Kenworthy is also preparing for another significant event: his final participation in the AIDS LifeCycle in California. This remarkable event involves a 400-plus mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, marking the culmination of a cause close to his heart.
Embarking on the AIDS LifeCycle Journey
Kenworthy’s involvement with the AIDS LifeCycle began in 2019. Reflecting on his first experience, he recalls witnessing the powerful energy and community spirit at the event’s conclusion. “In 2018, I was in LA and went to cheer on a friend as he crossed the finish line. The celebration was incredible, and I was inspired to join in,” Kenworthy shares.
Recognizing the potential to raise awareness and funds through his platform, Kenworthy enthusiastically signed up. “I thought, with over a million followers, if each contributed a dollar, we could make a substantial impact,” he says. Although fundraising proved more challenging than anticipated, Kenworthy’s first ride raised an impressive $250,000. For this final ride, he has already garnered over $70,000, with hopes for further donations.
The Significance of the Final Ride
Participating in the last AIDS LifeCycle holds deep meaning for Kenworthy. “It’s a bittersweet experience. The ride is physically demanding, especially considering I’m not a seasoned road biker. Despite my fitness, the grueling nature of biking 100 miles daily for a week is daunting,” he admits.
Kenworthy reminisces about his first ride: “The physical toll was immense, yet the camaraderie among participants was unparalleled. Crossing the finish line was a mix of triumph and sadness because of the bonds formed along the journey. This year, knowing it’s the last ride makes it even more poignant.”
A Personal Connection to the Cause
Kenworthy’s dedication to the AIDS LifeCycle is fueled by personal connections. “One of my closest friends is HIV positive. His journey from a harrowing diagnosis to becoming undetectable is inspiring, yet he still faces stigma,” Kenworthy explains. His friend’s experience and the memory of those lost to AIDS drive his commitment. “I ride for him and countless others, honoring those who weren’t as fortunate.”
The AIDS epidemic’s impact resonates deeply with Kenworthy. “Reflecting on the talent and lives lost is heart-wrenching. It’s not lost on me that in another era, it could have been my friends or myself,” he says solemnly.
