Rutger published: "Guess the Decade: Anti-LGBTQ+ Headlines Game Launches Online"

An engaging new browser-based game, reminiscent of a beloved British television show, invites players to discern whether certain inflammatory headlines hail from the 1980s or the present day. Designed to highlight prevalent prejudices, the game challenges participants to identify if the sensationalist tabloid stories reflect anti-gay sentiment from the 20th century or anti-trans rhetoric from the current era.

Titled "Have I Got Phobia For You," this interactive experience draws inspiration from the long-standing TV panel show "Have I Got News For You," known for its humorous take on weekly news with iconic hosts Ian Hislop and Paul Merton. The game cleverly plays on the show's name, offering a playful yet poignant examination of media bias over the decades.

"Eighties tabloid headlines about gay people were shocking at the time, and they would be even more so today," reads the introduction to the game. "Yet, as we examine contemporary news, there's an unsettling sense of déjà vu."

The game presents players with a selection of real headlines from the tabloid press, prompting them to determine the era of origin. Among the headlines featured is a 2018 proclamation from The Daily Telegraph: "The tyranny of the transgender minority has got to be stopped." This is juxtaposed with a 1998 headline from The Sun, which provocatively asked: "Are we being run by a gay mafia?"

Upon completing all five rounds, players receive a score, with journalists from a prominent LGBTQ+ news outlet achieving a commendable 90 percent accuracy. The developers, a creative team from A Joint Project London, conceived the game as a "playful method to raise awareness of the often-damaging narratives propagated by mainstream media."

"Our aim is to remind people that, while progress has been made for some groups, conditions have deteriorated for others," explained a spokesperson for the project. "We hope to contribute, albeit in a small way, to shifting the tone of mainstream media coverage."

Rory Robinson, the creative director of the project, emphasized, "Bigotry is cyclical. In these times, when transgender individuals are under constant assault from all sides, it's imperative for the community to unite and show that the LGB stands in solidarity with the T."

Beyond the game itself, players are presented with sobering statistics from the charity Stop Hate UK. These statistics reveal a stark reality: transgender individuals in England and Wales are twice as likely to experience crime compared to their cisgender counterparts. In 2020/2021 alone, over 2,630 trans individuals were victims of hate crimes, yet a staggering 88 percent did not report these incidents to the authorities. Of those who did report their victimization, nearly half expressed dissatisfaction with the police response.

This innovative game aims to foster thoughtful reflection and dialogue about the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ communities. It serves as a poignant reminder that, although strides have been made in some areas, significant work remains to be done to combat bigotry and discrimination.

"Have I Got Phobia For You" is accessible for free and can be played on any computer or smartphone browser. It offers a unique opportunity for players to engage with important social issues in an interactive and educational format.

We invite you to share your experiences and thoughts about the game. Join the conversation and remember to maintain respect for all perspectives.

Let's work together to promote a more inclusive and understanding world.
