Rutger published: Grimes Condemns Nazism Following Elon Musk's Controversial Public Gesture

The hyperpop artist Grimes has recently taken a firm stand against Nazism, responding to a wave of criticism directed at her ex-partner, Elon Musk. The controversy arose after the tech mogul made a gesture during Donald Trump’s inauguration that some interpreted as reminiscent of a Nazi salute. This incident has sparked widespread discussion and brought Grimes into the spotlight, given her past relationship with Musk.

Elon Musk, the 53-year-old CEO, was seen making the gesture on January 20th, during the inauguration ceremony after expressing gratitude to voters. This gesture, coupled with Musk's history of controversial social media posts, including one that referred to an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory as "the actual truth," has intensified public scrutiny.

In the aftermath of this event, the political group Led By Donkeys projected a video onto the wall of Musk’s Tesla factory in Berlin. The video criticized Musk’s perceived support for far-right movements across Europe, further fueling the debate about his political leanings.

As the mother of three children with Musk—X Æ A-Xii, Exa Dark Sideræl, and Techno Mechanicus—Grimes, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher, faced mounting pressure to respond. Fans and critics alike called on her to break her silence and address her ex-partner's actions.

Grimes Speaks Out

Grimes took to social media to address the situation, expressing her initial surprise at the backlash. "While I deeply respect your concern," she wrote, "it is unhealthy that people are this upset when I have not even been online yet today and am only just learning about this controversy now. I don’t know what happened, and I will not make a rash statement—I am not a citizen of this country."

She emphasized her independence by stating, "I am not him," and expressed her reluctance to be held accountable for her ex-partner's actions. Grimes continued, "I will not make a statement every time he does something. I can only send love back into a world that is hurting."

Despite the external pressure, Grimes chose to prioritize her family and wellbeing over public opinion, stating, "To be clear, I could go talk s**t and be on a bunch of magazine covers and be a feminist hero and get clout—but it would serve no purpose. I choose my children’s wellbeing."

Denouncing Extremism

When further pressed by fans to denounce alt-right and Nazi ideologies, Grimes responded unequivocally, "I am happy to denounce Nazism." She explained her initial hesitation, "I’ve just gotten out of breakfast and have to catch a flight, and am still debating how to approach things diplomatically because I feel in over my head." Nevertheless, she reassured her followers, "If there’s concern about that, I am happy to set the record straight in a meaningful way."

On January 28th, Grimes reiterated her stance against extremism in a social media post, addressing "some persistent trolls" and reaffirming, "If it wasn’t clear—I very much denounce Nazi-ism and white supremacy." She acknowledged her initial oversight, saying, "I am sorry I didn’t take this more seriously sooner; I did not realize the extent of the issue. But it has come to my attention from some of y’all that this has been creating a lot of trouble."

Navigating Public Perception

Grimes also took the opportunity to express gratitude towards her loyal fans, acknowledging the challenges they faced in supporting her amidst the controversies. "I honestly thank the people who r still grimes fans [because] my god I have not made it easy for you haha," she wrote. "At this point, it’s literally like some kind of mystical trial to harden the will."

In addition to her ex-partner's controversies, Grimes has faced scrutiny for her own political views, notably expressing support for the U.S. acquiring Greenland. The Arctic island, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has been a topic of geopolitical discussion, with Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede advocating for independence. Grimes’ comments on the matter, including a since-deleted tweet about potential Russian threats, have added to the complex narrative surrounding her public persona.

Despite the challenges, Grimes continues to navigate her public image with a focus on authenticity and personal values. Her recent statements reflect a commitment to addressing important social issues while maintaining her individual perspective.
