Rutger published: Government Considers Extending Ban on Trans Puberty Blockers to Private Hormone Treatments

Government looks at expanding hormone treatment restrictions

In a recent High Court session, UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting was revealed as considering broadening an existing ban on puberty blockers, potentially extending it even further. The new rules could soon cover private prescriptions too, leaving many in and out confused and concerned about hormone replacement therapy (HRT) options available.

The government has called upon expert panels, promising a report by July, that'll dive deep on these hormone therapies. This follows their dismissal opposing a broad judicial review request by detransitioner Keira Bell and others.

A closer look at puberty blocker ban

The judicial review chatter started after an indefinite ban on puberty blockers was placed on those under 18 by UK government, citing "safety risks" they deemed unacceptable. Critics fired back, describing it as "irrational" not having similar restriction on cross-sex hormones.

Initially banned in May 2024 by a Conservative government, this action came after a report urged extreme caution on prescribing these drugs. Hilay Cass presented a hefty 400-page report, and it had over 32 recommendations just focused on care improvements.

After Labour took hold in July, Prime Minister Keir Starmer decided this ban would stay, and found ways further than ever before.

Debates rolling on

Just last month, Streeting spoke about genuine regrets he feels, being aware that ban's causing anxiety among transgender youth. Meanwhile, there's been a 12% hike in waiting lists seeking gender-affirming healthcare services in England, over last year.

While puberty blockers got attention, HRT involves notable hormone amounts like estrogen, progesterone or testosterone, aiding one's physical appearance shift between feminine or masculine features. Feminizing HRT could bring breast tissue growth and facial softening while testosterone leads deeper voices and hairier faces.

The Department Health rep, Iain Steele, told High Court that Streeting's waiting on expert guidance from NHS England, especially regarding HRT. Steele called Bell's legal challenge "premature and academic."

Expert takes and public reaction

Steele delved further, "The defendant [Streeting] has chosen a careful review route. NHS England's expert group, formed at his asking, delivers counsel alongside official work aiding his decisions."

Keira Bell expressed relief, stating, "I'm glad that Secretary's considering cross-sex hormone ban again outside NHS's reach. Potent drugs shouldn't get in hands young ones."

Bell also noted, "Finally, overdue decision's under review, bringing comfort that some progress seems underway." She stressed vulnerable kid's safety remains top priority.

Paul Conrathe, representing Bell, showed satisfaction seeing a working group stand up, hoping they "urgently review banning idea cross-sex hormones in youths."

On other hand, Dr. Aidan Kelly, director Gender Plus and clinical psychologist, voiced opposition saying, "Offer sensitive, complex care's always between young person, family, and clinical team. No justifying government interference."
