Rutger published: GOP Candidate Withdraws from Wisconsin Governor Race Amid Controversy Over Online Activity

A Republican candidate running in Wisconsin's governor race has pulled out after a storm erupted over his online activity. Bill Berrien, a business owner, stepped down after a local newspaper uncovered his online interactions with a nonbinary adult performer, which set off a heated discussion.

Breaking down Berrien's withdrawal from politics

Berrien blames a hostile political climate and a lackluster shot at winning as his main reasons behind bowing out. He lashed out at journalists, accusing them more interested in his personal life than his policies. "Today's political scene makes it incredibly hard just separate issues from smears," he argued.

He made a point about targeting a Milwaukee-based paper that broke his story, suggesting it was their move in a bigger scheme against him. "It was a hit job, and we've got proof they started digging around back in January," he lamented. "All because I apparently did some reading—nothing illegal, dirty, or morally wrong—just reading."

What's behind his controversial online activity?

The publication highlighted Berrien's actions on Medium, where he followed accounts like that belonging nonbinary, queer adult performer Jiz Lee. He was also seen endorsing articles about sex positivity and poly lifestyles, reacting favorably pieces with titles like “My Husband Loves Watching Me Flirt with Another Man” and “‘Ethical Porn' Starts When We Pay For It.”

What's puzzling? While his online activities hinted at progressive leanings, he was spouting anti-LGBTQ+ messages during his campaign. He bashed Democratic Governor Tony Evers' move against a bill, which aimed at barring transgender girls from school sports. His campaign ads also pushed protecting what he called traditional family values and opposed "woke indoctrination."

Nonbinary performer exposes double standards

Jiz Lee, who Berrien followed, didn't hold back on social media, pointing out what seemed like blatant hypocrisy in Berrien's actions. "Following trans porn stars and reading up on sex and relationships? That's fine," Lee expressed. "But backing laws that cut down on trans people's rights? That's shameful."

Lee's comments echoed a wider critique aimed at politicians whose public statements clash with their personal actions, particularly when such beliefs harm targeted communities.

After Berrien: what happens now?

Berrien's team didn't confirm or deny if he knew about those specific accounts but balked at claims he personally vetted each one. A campaign spokesperson called it "absurd" that Berrien should've been aware. In damage control, they scrambled unfollow those accounts.

Now that Berrien's out, Rep. Tom Tiffany and Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann are left vying in Wisconsin's Republican primary. Across party lines, Democrats have familiar names like Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez competing.

Political lessons from this controversy

This whole episode sheds light on ongoing debates in American politics over where personal freedom ends and accountability begins. It highlights how public figures are closely watched online these days, with their web habits able swing entire careers.

As Wisconsin's gubernatorial race unfolds, voters are watching closely see if candidates' personal beliefs align with their political platforms and how well they truly represent voters' values. For LGBTQ+ folks, it underscores why they need leaders who don't just talk equality but live it, rather than feign allyship.

With Berrien out, whoever takes his place will have their own past under a magnifying glass, and both their statements and online actions will be dissected by a public eager authenticity and honesty.
