In a recent move that has sparked significant backlash, Google has made the decision to remove mentions of various cultural observances, including LGBTQ+ Pride Month, from its Calendar app. This change also affects the visibility of other important months such as Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Indigenous Peoples Month.
Google has stated that the reason behind this removal is the unsustainable nature of manually maintaining these observances across numerous countries. As Google spokesperson Madison Cushman Veld explained, "Some years ago, the Calendar team started manually adding a broader set of cultural moments in a wide number of countries around the world. We got feedback that some other events and countries were missing — and maintaining hundreds of moments manually and consistently globally wasn’t scalable or sustainable."
Starting in mid-2024, Google plans to revert to showing only public holidays and national observances sourced from timeanddate.com. However, users will still have the option to manually add significant dates to their personal calendars.
The decision has not been well-received by all. Many commenters on various platforms have accused Google of succumbing to political pressure, particularly from recent right-wing campaigns that criticize diversity efforts. Specific accusations have been made about Google "kissing up" to political figures who oppose diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
One commenter expressed concern by saying, "They are trying to erase anyone who isn’t a cis white male," reflecting fears that the removal of these observances signals a broader cultural erasure.
These reactions are likely in response to political figures such as former President Donald Trump, who have recently intensified their stance against DEI efforts. Notably, Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a memo instructing the Department of Justice to scrutinize DEI initiatives to prevent what she termed "illegal discrimination and preferences." However, Bondi clarified that cultural observances that celebrate diversity and promote awareness are permissible.
Google's decision comes amidst a broader trend of companies reevaluating their DEI commitments. In recent reports, Google has quietly removed mentions of past DEI initiatives from its annual disclosures. Additionally, the company has halted its efforts to actively recruit from historically underrepresented groups. Despite these corporate shifts, data indicates that consumers increasingly support companies that make a genuine commitment to DEI principles.
These developments raise important questions about the role of major corporations in supporting cultural and community observances. As companies like Google adjust their policies, the impact on public perception and consumer trust remains to be seen.
The removal of these cultural observances from Google's Calendar app has prompted discussions about how individuals and communities can continue to recognize and celebrate important cultural moments. While Google has opted to streamline its calendar entries, individuals and organizations have the opportunity to take proactive steps in ensuring that significant observances remain visible and celebrated.
Options such as community-driven calendars and targeted awareness campaigns can help bridge the gap left by corporate decisions. By taking charge of how cultural moments are recognized, communities can foster inclusivity and ensure that diverse histories and contributions are acknowledged.
As we navigate these changes, staying connected with our communities and advocating for visibility and representation remain crucial. Engaging with platforms and organizations that align with these values can amplify voices and support ongoing efforts to celebrate diversity.
In a world where corporate decisions can significantly influence cultural visibility, the responsibility lies with both companies and individuals to ensure that diversity is not only recognized but actively celebrated and promoted.
