Rutger published: Good Samaritan Beaten While Defending Trans Woman; Community Rallies to Support His Recovery

In a heartwarming demonstration of community support, a man who heroically intervened to protect a trans woman from harassment has found himself the recipient of overwhelming generosity. His story of courage and the subsequent help he received is a testament to the power of solidarity.

This past July, 33-year-old Jarod Adkison went to Barton Springs Pool near Austin, Texas, where he was enjoying a day out. As he was about to leave, he witnessed an unsettling scene unfold. A group of three men approached a group of women, including a trans woman, and began to harass them.

According to Adkison, the harassment began with one of the men making derogatory comments about the trans woman. "It all stemmed from the men seeing the trans lady and making a lewd gesture," Adkison recounted. One of the men reportedly pointed and expressed his disapproval in a coarse manner, saying, "I don’t agree with that lifestyle, it’s gross."

Feeling compelled to act, Adkison stepped in and attempted to defuse the situation by asking the men to leave the women alone. His intervention, intended to protect the women from further harm, instead turned the men’s aggression toward him.

What happened next was a brutal assault. As Adkison tried to walk away, one of the men attacked him from behind. "I wasn’t trying to fight," Adkison later explained. The assault was severe; he was hit on the head and knocked to the ground, suffering a concussion and a broken jaw. The damage was so severe that a piece of his jawbone ended up in his ear canal.

The aftermath was daunting. Adkison was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent a CT scan and received the initial treatment for his injuries. However, he was faced with a significant challenge: covering the cost of necessary reconstructive surgery. Adkison works in construction, a field where health insurance is often not provided, and he earned too much to qualify for Medicaid.

Support Pours In

Faced with mounting medical bills and a lengthy recovery period, Adkison’s parents took the initiative to set up a GoFundMe campaign. The story of his bravery and subsequent assault quickly gained national attention, and a video of the incident circulated widely on social media.

The fundraising campaign resonated with people across the country, and donations poured in. Although the campaign raised over $74,000, it still wasn’t enough to cover the full cost of his medical treatment. However, it did help cover the income he lost during his three-week recovery period.

In a fortuitous turn of events, Adkison’s plight reached the ears of Dr. CJ Langevin, a compassionate plastic surgeon. Moved by the story, Dr. Langevin offered to perform the surgery pro bono if Adkison could cover the cost of the surgical suite time, which was $1,400. This generous offer was a lifeline for Adkison.

"Ice cream and milkshakes were a big staple," Adkison joked, recalling the period when his jaw was wired shut. The surgery was a success, and Adkison was able to begin his journey toward physical recovery.

Justice and Reflection

In the wake of the attack, two men have been arrested, charged with the assault on Adkison. Encouraged by friends, Adkison decided to pursue charges, despite his initial reluctance. "I don’t hold any ill will," he said, noting that the attackers were "young guys" aged 28 and 29.

Through it all, Adkison remains steadfast in his belief that he did the right thing by standing up for the trans woman that day. "Honestly, I think I might have done the right thing," he reflected. "I would have felt awful if I had not helped out."

Adkison’s 9-year-old son, who was with his mother during the attack, knows that his father was involved in an altercation. "My dad’s a hero," the child proudly says, a sentiment shared by many who have heard about Adkison’s bravery.
