Creativity and camaraderie shine at Dupont Circle's High Heel Race

On a lively Tuesday, October 28th, Washington, D.C.'s Dupont Circle was alive with excitement as it hosted its 38th annual High Heel Race. Imagine a street full, not just with any race, but with runners in fabulous high heels strutting their stuff. From R Street all through P Street, participants—decked out in their most elaborate costumes—sprinted down 17th Street. The energy was contagious, as a crowd gathered along sidewalks, eager not just as spectators, but as enthusiastic supporters.

A jubilant celebration embracing diversity

Sponsored by Mayor Muriel Bowser alongside her office's LGBTQ Affairs division, this event pumped up D.C.'s spirit as a hub that embraces everyone. Cake Pop!, a charismatic drag performer, emceed with spectacular flair, lighting up an already vibrant evening.

The festivities kicked off with DJ Alex Love spinning tracks at 5 p.m., amping up everyone from locals simply wandering by, up through dedicated festival-goers. The stage at 17th and R became a hotspot with performances by groups as varied as DC Different Drummers, Cheer DC, and standout acts like Pirouette and Ricky Rosé. The lineup was a who's who, featuring Sophia Honey, Cake Pop! (our emcee!), Kaira, and Bang Garçon, each contributing a unique flavor.

A showcase that dazzles: The costume contest

Picture-possibly-the-most-fabulous-costume-contest-ever, where imagination had no bounds! Among all competitors, an ensemble inspired by our local environment—a clever spotted lantern fly outfit—clinched "Most D.C." honors. It was creativity at its best.

Community pride takes center stage

Japer Bowles, who heads up LGBTQ Affairs, took a moment on stage, reflecting on an event that started with a few drag queens racing from JR's down towards Annie's. "Nearly 40 years later, here we are," shared Bowles. "We're still creating joy and celebrating creativity and community. It's our energy, and we're sharing it with thousands tonight."

He linked that energy back, calling recent WorldPride 2025 hosted by D.C. a testament. "The world's seen it—D.C. truly embodies Pride, in all its vibrant forms," Bowles said, reminding us how events like this one resonate beyond love: they do. Businesses bloom, too. "Pride's more than love—it's about bringing progress and prosperity," Bowles added.

Economic uplift and cultural resonance

Mayor Muriel Bowser also addressed those gathered, proudly declaring, "D.C.—the gayest city in this wide old globe." She reflected on hosting WorldPride, welcoming people, and generating impressive economic gains—$310 million in impact! It wasn't just about numbers, though. "We showed what D.C. really stands by—proud residents standing up and taking care," Bowser said. "As mayor, I cherish this community. It's an honor welcoming our Council peers."

Style and community leaders shine amidst celebration

The event drew notables like Attorney General Brian Schwalb and Council Chair Phil Mendelson, alongside Council members like Kenyan McDuffie and Brooke Pinto—showing how integral these celebrations are in showcasing D.C.'s dynamic and open-hearted culture.

The race ended on a cheerful note with “Lady Liberty” securing an amusing victory. More than an event full only defining LGBTQ+ culture's fun and inclusivity, this race bridges cultural expression with community action, reflecting D.C.'s ethos.

Can't join in? No worries! A photo gallery captures each sparkling moment—offering visual snippets from an unforgettable night brimming with life and creativity.

It's an annual tradition surely, but one bigger than sum. It stands as a testament—a celebration echoing Washington, D.C.'s ongoing prideful spirit, flowing creativity, and enduring community strength.
