Ginger Johnson: Making waves on Celebrity MasterChef

This holiday season, all eyes are on Ginger Johnson, a vibrant performer who has charmed audiences on both stage and screen. Known not just as a captivating performer, but now as a culinary star, Ginger made history as Celebrity MasterChef 2025's first drag queen winner. Fresh off her win from RuPaul's Drag Race UK in 2023, she's reached another incredible milestone.

"Normally, our Christmas dinner's just steak and chips," Ginger laughs from her cozy, Battenburg-patterned kitchen. "It's usually just me, my partner, and our cats. But this year's special." Still buzzing from her surprise win, Ginger radiates joy and warmth during our virtual chat.

Ginger's delicious journey and personal victory

Hailing from County Durham, Ginger looks back fondly on her culinary adventures. "I've always loved eating," she grins. "Feeding myself has never been a problem, even if it meant having two dinners!" Even with her hectic post-Drag Race schedule, Ginger dedicated herself fully, diving headfirst with YouTube cooking tutorials. "Breaking four pasta machines was part and parcel," she giggles, highlighting her trial-and-error learning curve.

Winning MasterChef was a huge personal victory, as well as a cultural milestone. "At one point, I had no choice but doing a pasta maker run in full drag," she recalls, her commitment evident. Ginger's dramatic flair and budding culinary prowess won over both judges and fans alike.

MasterChef: Breaking barriers and stealing hearts

Ginger faced tough competition from author Dawn O'Porter and ex-rugby player Alwyn Wyn Jones, but her funky 70s menu and infectious personality stole judge's hearts. "When they said my name, it was unreal," she shares. "Like winning Drag Race all over again."

This season, food critic Grace Dent joined MasterChef, stepping in as a new host. "Grace's vibe in that kitchen was like home," Ginger smiles. "She pushed me in all right ways. Total queen, that one."

Being MasterChef's first drag queen winner, Ginger recognizes her role as a trailblazer, never shying from any backlash. "RuPaul always says what others think about me doesn't matter," she confidently says. "I'm here living my truth, honored representing LGBTQ+ folks on such a big stage."

What comes after: Comedy, cooking, and more TV

With her MasterChef victory gleaming in her kitchen, Ginger Johnson's looking forward. Her comedy tour, Show Pony, kicks off September 2026. "I'm open-eyed and ready," she ponders, imagining herself on shows like Strictly Come Dancing or Taskmaster.

Her culinary passion only grows. "I've turned my kitchen retro, all 70s chic," she says. "Cooking's still calling, maybe even my own show." Her social media posts, like her Christmas sandwich rankings, hint at her rise as a foodie influencer.

Ginger's transition from drag diva extraordinaire turned culinary queen underscores her versatility and grit. "Caught that cooking bug big time," she grins. "There's more magic coming from my kitchen soon!"
