A recent study has uncovered a fascinating generational shift in attitudes towards sexuality among young people. According a report from Hinge, Generation Z seems a lot more open about exploring their sexual identities than Millennials.
In its "2025 LGBTQIA+ D.A.T.E Report"—which stands Data, Advice, Trends, and Expertise—Hinge dives deep on how young adults are revolutionizing views on sexual identities. Focusing on Gen Z folks aged 18-26, it reveals how this generation's challenging traditional gender and sexuality norms.
One standout finding from this study shows Gen Z daters are 21% more likely than Millennials (aged 29-44) date people with different gender identities. And this openness isn't just about who they're dating—it extends their broader sexual exploration. The research also highlights Gen Z's 22% greater willingness compared Millennials engage in sexual experiences outside their usual gender attractions.
What's more, Gen Z individuals are 39% more likely Millennials reassess their sexual orientation when they encounter unexpected attractions. It's this fluid, open-minded stance on sexuality that really sets them apart from past generations' more rigid classifications.
Hinge's report paints a picture today's dating scene that's all about fluidity and personal connection. "The future dating's fluid, expansive, and ours define and redefine," it says. This points growing trend where young people ditch traditional labels favor relationships built on understanding and emotional connection.
Moe Ari Brown, Hinge's Love & Connection Expert and a licensed therapist, who uses he/they pronouns, underscores that attraction goes beyond just looks or gender. "True compatibility isn't about matching labels—it's about showing up each other," he explains.
This move prioritizing emotional connections matches up with broader trends. Last year, Hinge spotlighted "slowmance," where queer daters focus on building emotional intimacy and trust over quick, superficial encounters.
The findings from Hinge echo other research showing a higher percentage young people identifying as LGBTQ+ compared older generations. For example, UK census data indicates that 6.91% young people identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual—notably higher than older groups.
Similarly, a 2023 survey from Business Insider and YouGov found that 5% Gen Z identify as queer, compared with just 1% Generation X and Millennials. These numbers support idea that younger generations are more comfortable identifying with diverse sexual orientations openly.
The visible and growing acceptance various sexual identities among young people highlights cultural swing inclusivity. As society evolves, it becomes essential foster respectful, affirming dialogues around diverse identities and experiences.
