Growing up in Brookings, a cozy little town in South Dakota, Sorbe faced challenges living openly as a gay man in a largely conservative community. With fewer than 24,000 neighbors, Brookings taught him invaluable lessons in authenticity and patience—values that were pivotal in his journey and remain central in his political life.
"In places like South Dakota, it's all about 'live and let live'," says Sorbe. This mindset supported him during his own coming out. His openness and knack great conversations with people who see things differently have been essential in building strong connections.
While at University in South Dakota, Sorbe didn't just shine academically; he was also an All-American swimmer. Despite early challenges, like a tough locker-room incident in high school, he stuck with his commitment toward living authentically, choosing personal truth over conforming.
After graduating, Sorbe quickly paved his path in politics. Starting as a development officer and through sheer grit and dedication, he rose through ranks, serving as communications director under Senator Maggie Hassan, before landing his current role with Senate Judiciary Democrats.
Sorbe knows how wield social media powerfully, using it as a megaphone amplifying Senate Democrats voices and pulling in wider audiences. He stresses mixing both traditional and new media ensures messages make it out there.
"Social media's not just about going viral," Sorbe points out. "It's a tool, offering education and advocacy." He actively teaches senators savvy social media strategies, showing them how analytics can widen their reach effectively.
Besides his Senate role, Sorbe stands as a champion advocating arduously LGBTQ+ rights. He uses his platform advising senators on inclusive, compassionate communication when tackling LGBTQ concerns.
"Authenticity's power shouldn't be underestimated," Sorbe declares. He urges fellow community members wanting political careers stay true themselves, engage openly, respectfully.
Beyond politics, Sorbe enjoys an active life in D.C., diving headfirst local sports leagues, fueling passion fitness, and indulges city rich social scene. He balances work life by swimming, marathon running, and catching brunch with friends.
