This past January, Joey Gale, a prominent voice in LGBTQ+ sports, received a significant nod from Seattle Kraken. Alongside Steven Thompson, Gale was honored as one among Kraken's 'Heroes' during their Pride Night at Climate Pledge Arena. This recognition didn't just mark a personal victory—it was a giant leap forward in LGBTQ+ visibility within hockey, a sport traditionally resistant on this front.
Back in 2019, Gale opened up about his experiences as a gay man in hockey. He carried a piece of advice from his days at Drake University: "Regardless how big or small, do something every day that makes your space queer." This guiding principle drove him toward creating a more inclusive environment, eventually leading Gale and Thompson toward establishing Seattle Pride Hockey Association.
When Seattle was gearing up with its new NHL team, Gale and Thompson saw a golden opportunity. Seattle Pride Hockey was born out that vision, aiming connect LGBTQ+ hockey enthusiasts across region, highlighting their enthusiasm and increasing numbers.
Right from start, Seattle Pride Hockey wasn't just about hitting puck. It was about carving out a haven LGBTQ+ players could truly feel at home. This mission came alive with first Seattle Pride Classic tournament in 2021, a debut that tied in nicely with Kraken's inaugural season. What started with four teams soon mushroomed world's biggest Pride hockey tourney.
This roaring success brought some growing pains, though—ally participation was edging out LGBTQ+ players. So, Gale and Thompson decided introduce a special registration just LGBTQ+, ensuring tournament maintained its focus.
Seattle Pride Hockey's impact stretches far beyond rink walls. It has become a beacon hope and acceptance many. There are countless stories players seizing tournament moment come out, and parents witnessing their kids play in genuinely inclusive environment first time.
These stories fuel Gale's passion. "The stories we hear from participants really give me energy keep going, even when it means late nights planning," he says.
Kraken's backing Seattle Pride Hockey has been steadfast. Even before they had official name, they were working with Gale and Thompson support LGBTQ+ hockey community, and partnership has only grown stronger.
Despite hurdles like NHL's ban Pride jerseys tape, Kraken's support remains firm. They've found ways sidestep league's restrictions—by dressing youth players and community reps Pride gear and hosting Pride-themed events just outside arena.
Gale commended Kraken's genuine push diversity and inclusion. "People here have a good sense what's fake. They'll call out anything that feels off. But what Kraken's built feels genuine and welcoming various backgrounds."
With Seattle Pride Hockey's continuous growth, Gale and Thompson are eager expand their outreach and impact. The first Frozen Pride Classic outdoor tournament will soon unfold in Winthrop, Washington, featuring 12 teams. It's yet another step toward making sports more inclusive.
Looking back, Gale feels encouraged by strides made in boosting LGBTQ+ visibility in hockey—a sport once felt out reach. "Seeing how far we've come warms my heart, especially now. Knowing we've made headway gives me comfort, but there's still so much fight left," he reflects.
Seattle Pride Hockey stands tall as testament sport's power foster inclusion and change, as they keep shining spotlight on LGBTQ+ representation sports.
