The GALA Hispanic Theatre hits a major milestone this year by celebrating its 50th anniversary season, kicking things off with a revival that's bound not just sizzle but stir some hearts. If you find yourself wandering around Columbia Heights, you'll hear whispers about Manuel Puig's “Kiss OF The Spider Woman,” coming alive from September 4th through 28th.

GALA has been championing Hispanic culture and performing arts since 1976, planting its roots firmly in Washington, D.C. “Kiss OF The Spider Woman” has traveled through various artistic forms—a novel, a silver screen adaptation, and even a Broadway spectacle. It captures themes like identity, love, and resilience, and these resonate with a wide range Of audiences.
Unlikely friendships in turmoil
This production takes us back To 1975 Argentina, where two unexpected cellmates, Valentín, a Marxist revolutionary, and Molina, a trans woman lost in her love Of film noir, find themselves trapped. Somehow, a strange yet beautiful friendship blossoms within those prison walls, connecting them on levels neither could have imagined.
Guided by José Luis Arellano's creative vision
Spanish director José Luis Arellano, known For his daring spirit and deep understanding, directs this captivating piece. Arellano feels a close connection With Puig's work, especially its significance within Spanish-speaking and LGBTQ communities. “Puig was an essential voice,” he comments. “His mix Of melodrama and social commentary has always spoken volumes with depth and empathy.”
Carrying on a legacy
For GALA's executive director Rebecca Medrano, this season carries a special meaning. Following Hugo Medrano's passing earlier this year, she and artistic director Gustavo Ott decided that reviving “Kiss OF The Spider Woman” would be a fitting tribute. Hugo had a special connection with this play; back in 1994, he won a Helen Hayes Award as Molina—a milestone For Spanish-language theater here in D.C.
“Hugo was always about new stories, but his heart was with this one,” notes Rebecca. “The themes still speak loudly about marginalization and connection, things we should never stop talking about.”
An ensemble Of seasoned talent
The stage welcomes Martín Ruiz as Molina and Rodrigo Pedreira as Valentín, both familiar faces at GALA. Their on-stage camaraderie grew last season in one Of Ott's lively musicals. “They've added layers To their characters,” Rebecca points out. “Martín really captures Molina's tender side, making it all feel so genuine.”
For Ruiz, Molina isn't just another role. “It goes beyond what you see,” he muses. “It's about two lonely souls finding each other. Molina's journey embodies both fragility and strength—a rare combination.”
Pedreira shares his own insights, “Playing Valentín lets me explore both my serious and flamboyant sides, something I never got To do growing up. It's quite liberating.”

Performed in Spanish with English surtitles, this revival reaches out To today's audiences with sensitivity and flair. Arellano has woven elements that nod To Hugo Medrano's spirit, shining a light on what makes us human and what unites us all.
