Sports and athleticism have always been central threads in Tim Hammond's life. As a kid, Tim was a natural at soccer, baseball, and basketball, and now he channels that same energy as a senior director at NBA, working hard every day so that everyone—from players on court, all kinds, and loyal fans in stands—feels included and represented.

Navigating challenges in sports

Growing up, Tim loved sports, but he often felt like an outsider while figuring out his identity as a teenager. "There wasn't anyone like me in sports, whether it was on TV or in my own neighborhood," he says. His story really drives home how vital representation and inclusion are in sports.

Tim's dedication hasn't gone unnoticed, landing him a spot in 2025's Rising 50 on Power 100, a list celebrating influential LGBTQ figures in sports. His career truly reflects his deep commitment toward fostering a welcoming and inclusive culture in athletics.

Finding his love again

Even though Tim stepped away from sports at one point, his passion never faded. He was a die-hard fan, attending college football games in Oregon and cheering on his favorite team, Portland Trail Blazers. This love ultimately led him back, blending his advocacy with athletics in his professional life.

Tim first made his mark in entertainment, where he was a driving force behind marketing at Viacom, collaborating with mega-channels like MTV and VH1, and even helping make "RuPaul's Drag Race" a household name. He also dabbled in music with ASCAP, shaping marketing and communications strategies.

A purposeful return

By 2021, Tim was back in sports, stepping up in his NBA role. He firmly believes that basketball unites people and communities. Initially doubtful, his time at NBA only deepened his faith in sports as a bridge. By 2024, he was co-chairing NBA Pride, championing LGBTQ inclusion more than ever.

It all started with a chance meeting with Bonnie Thurston from WNBA, which led Tim straight back in, eventually taking over as co-chair after Roman King. Now, he's all about strategizing key NBA moments and pushing inclusion forward, even when things heat up politically.

Creating inclusive sports communities

Though social media can sometimes amplify negativity, Tim stresses that these voices don't capture sports' true spirit. "You'll see some unsupportive comments online," he admits. But he knows nothing beats that electric, unifying feeling at a game, shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow fans.

Tim Hammond's journey shows that no matter who you are, there's a place in sports. From playing fields in his youth all through a pivotal role in NBA, his story isn't just inspiring—it's a testament that sports can drive meaningful change and bring us all together.
