Olivia and Katie, who had spent years living in Washington, D.C., and frequently explored the Shenandoah area, were captivated by the property's rich history and picturesque setting. They knew they had to seize this opportunity.
Hopkins Ordinary, which graces the National Register of Historic Places, began its journey as a modest stopover for travelers, complete with a vibrant tavern in the basement. Over the years, it expanded and adapted, turning into apartments before its recent transformation back into an inn, now with an added twist: a brewery. The property is now a delightful blend of hospitality and craft beer, thanks to its previous owners, who reinstated its original charm.
Olivia and Katie have embraced the challenge of managing this historical landmark, located on Sperryville's quaint main street. They see their role as a chance to blend tradition with modernity. "We want to infuse a youthful energy into both the bed and breakfast and the brewery," they shared. "Many people our age are searching for authentic experiences and want to stay in places with character. It’s exciting to offer a place where guests can enjoy a drink brewed just downstairs."
Describing Hopkins Ordinary, they said, "It’s the epitome of a classic B&B, adorned with Victorian-style decor, cozy rooms, inviting common areas, and wrap-around porches. Almost every room features a warm, wood-burning fireplace, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring."
The couple has also embraced the inn's brewery, which features nine distinct beers, all crafted on-site. Retaining the skilled brewmaster was a priority for them, ensuring the quality of the beer remains top-notch. The property also includes a spacious biergarten for guests to enjoy, as well as a cottage with additional accommodations.
Initially, Olivia and Katie approached their move from the bustling city to a small Virginia town with some trepidation. Transitioning to this new lifestyle and becoming stewards of such a historically significant property felt daunting. However, they were pleasantly surprised by the warm reception they received. "The town’s residents welcomed us with open arms," they said. "Local entrepreneurs and neighbors stopped by with gifts, support, and invitations to community events."
Their concerns about being LGBTQ in a rural setting were quickly assuaged. Sperryville, along with Rappahannock County, is known for its progressive and inclusive atmosphere, partly due to the influx of D.C. transplants. The couple felt no need to hide their identities, finding instead a community eager to celebrate diversity.
"As members of the queer community, we’re committed to fostering an inclusive environment in both our inn and brewery," Olivia and Katie emphasized. "We’re reviewing all our practices to ensure every guest feels truly welcome, from LGBTQ individuals to families alike."
They are passionate about personalizing the inn, treating it not only as a business but as their home. "We welcome guests personally, recommend local attractions, and serve them drinks in our brewery. We’ve crafted a delectable two-course breakfast menu featuring family recipes and fresh local ingredients, including a popular oat and coconut milk chia seed pudding."
The brewery boasts 25 beer recipes, alongside a selection of wine and non-alcoholic beverages, with a liquor license forthcoming.
Only two months in, Olivia and Katie are thrilled with their decision to relocate from D.C. to Sperryville. They take pride in their new venture, cherishing the chance to lay down roots and nurture an iconic establishment. "We recognize the cultural significance of this building and are honored to contribute to its enduring legacy."
