Recently, there was a bit a controversy when Meta removed ads from a well-known LGBTQ+ travel platform. The company's founder didn't hold back, calling it an act akin "censorship."
Back in 2014, Matthieu Jost created misterb&b. Why? Because he and his partner faced homophobia while traveling. So, he wanted a space where LGBTQ+ travelers could find welcoming and inclusive places. Fast forward, and misterb&b has become one big player in helping queer travelers find safe havens worldwide.
Jost popped onto social media recently, clearly upset. Meta had pulled misterb&b's ads from Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Their reason? The ads' focus on "sexual orientation and gender identity" didn't match up with their new policies.
Meta told misterb&b that their ads contained topics related "sexuality or sexual orientation," pinpointing individuals with a specific gender identity. While these policy tweaks are supposed keep expression free, they've raised eyebrows and alarm bells about censorship. Plus, with Meta rolling back on diversity, equity, and inclusion, it's no wonder LGBTQ+ themes are feeling squeezed.
In an interview, Jost shared just how shocked and frustrated his team was by their ads getting blocked. "Our ads are all about inclusivity and safe travels, especially LGBTQ+ folks. So, seeing them rejected felt more censored than misunderstood," he expressed. "The restrictions hit everywhere, not just in one region."
Dealing with Meta on this issue? Jost describes it as "frustrating." The appeals process drags on, and clarity? Pretty much non-existent. "We talk met with Meta employees who seem just as baffled by these policies," he pointed out. "They even suggested we tone down LGBTQ+ elements in our ads, which goes against everything we stand."
Despite their best attempts, misterb&b's issues with Meta linger. Jost sees this as a broader issue where LGBTQ+ businesses lack support. They're stuck navigating choppy policy waters. And they're not alone. Other LGBTQ+ groups have run up against similar walls, pointing towards a bigger trend where AI moderation or user reports could be swaying things unfairly.
These policy changes by Meta are happening during a time when diversity initiatives face cultural pushback in U.S., led by certain politicians and media figures. Former President Donald Trump and his media allies are front and center in this.
Big brands have started distancing themselves from diversity efforts, aligning with these changes in culture and politics. Stakeholders have raised concerns about these shifts. A Meta oversight board co-chair even flagged what this might mean gender and LGBTQ+ rights on their platforms, emphasizing unchecked hate speech's real-world consequences.
So far, Meta hasn't said much about misterb&b's situation or others like it. As social media continues evolving, LGBTQ+ content creators like misterb&b find themselves fighting just be seen and heard. This saga highlights an urgent need fair, transparent policies that uplift diverse voices while tackling global challenges.
