Rutger published: Former NHL Player Retracts Controversial Pride Night Comments

Ron Duguay, a former NHL player, recently found himself at the center of a social media storm after he posted and then deleted a controversial rant regarding the NHL's Pride Night events. The former New York Rangers player, who enjoyed a career peak reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in 1979, took to social media to voice his discontent following a game that saw his former team lose to the Los Angeles Kings on March 16th.

In his initial posts, Duguay attributed the Rangers' 4-1 defeat to what he called "bad mojo" allegedly brought about by the Pride Night celebrations, which included the display of a rainbow flag. Duguay, who is currently in a relationship with Sarah Palin, a former vice-presidential candidate, expressed his views on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.

Deleted Posts and Backlash

"I didn’t want to say it before the game but I saw this coming," Duguay posted in now-deleted messages. He further criticized the inclusion of the Pride Flag in the national anthem segment, suggesting it was a bad omen for the team. "Down 4-1 right after the singing National anthem to [the Pride Flag] to a small group, bad idea bad mojo," he stated, pinning the blame on what he termed as a "select few college brain washed up, woked kids pushing their agenda within the organization."

The posts did not sit well with fans of the Rangers or the broader NHL community, prompting significant backlash. Many were quick to point out the flaws in Duguay's theory, noting the Rangers' successful history with Pride Night games. Adam Herman, a sportswriter for Bleacher Report, highlighted this fact, stating, "The New York Rangers won every single Pride Night game between 2012 and 2025. Just in case any bigots are keeping score at home. Maybe this year’s team lost because they lose most games."

Ongoing Controversy

Duguay’s comments were not limited to the outcome of the game. He also criticized the Rangers' decision to distribute a Pride Night Pouch to the first 10,000 fans who attended the game at Madison Square Garden. He questioned the appropriateness of the team engaging in such initiatives, writing, "Have you not been reading and watching the news? What if a situation was to occur at the Garden? What then?"

"How can a professional, non-political entity like a sports team sanction this stuff on families, especially with kids?" he continued, arguing that most people do not wish to "celebrate a group’s sexual life at a game." Instead, he suggested that sports events should remain "a nice family night out celebrating and enjoying their sports team."

Support for Inclusion

Despite Duguay's comments, the NHL has been making concerted efforts to promote inclusivity and support LGBTQ+ events like Pride Night. Players like Jack Hughes from the New Jersey Devils have been vocal supporters of these initiatives. Hughes, who played a pivotal role in Team USA’s gold medal victory at the 2026 Winter Olympics, has been a steadfast ally of the LGBTQ+ community.

In a 2024 interview, Hughes stated, "The team I play for, the [New Jersey] Devils, we really support that, and we’re a really welcoming organization, so I think a bunch of guys on our team were really looking forward to that." He added that the support is deeply embedded in their team's culture and that "it's really important, so it wasn’t even a thought not to do it for us."

It’s clear that while some may resist change, there is a growing movement within sports organizations to create welcoming and inclusive environments for all fans. This is not just about supporting LGBTQ+ rights but also about fostering a community where diversity is celebrated.

As the NHL and other sports leagues continue to host Pride events and promote inclusivity, it's essential for fans and players alike to engage in respectful discourse and to champion acceptance both on and off the field.
