In a recent match that ended in a goalless draw, Nacho Ruiz, a left-back for UB Conquense, expressed his discontent with the homophobic taunts he faced from the stands. The match, against local rivals Quintanar del Rey, was a historic encounter as it marked the first time the two teams met at this level, the Segunda Federación in Spain. However, the event was overshadowed by discriminatory chants from the home supporters.
The unfortunate incident led to an announcement over the stadium's PA system, urging fans to cease such behavior. Ruiz, who is not only a defender but also a male model with a significant social media presence, took to Instagram to address the abuse he endured. He shared that the insults included derogatory terms such as 'f*ggot,' and other sexist and homophobic remarks. Despite the hateful nature of these comments, Ruiz noted that they did not affect him personally, but he felt compelled to speak out against the normalization of such hatred.
In a statement, Ruiz emphasized the importance of not normalizing homophobia, sexism, or racism in football. He declared, "Regardless of whether these insults affect me or not, which they don't, I think it is regrettable that in the 21st century there is still this hatred in football fields."
On Tuesday, Ruiz appeared at a press conference, explaining his decision to go public: "I wanted to ensure that no other footballer has to go through something similar." His club, UB Conquense, based in Cuenca, voiced their support by releasing a statement condemning the abuse and calling for action against those responsible. "Football should be a space of respect and enjoyment for all involved," the statement read.
Alberto Lejarraga, another player who has faced similar abuse, shared his support for Ruiz on social media. Lejarraga, the only openly gay or bisexual footballer known in the upper tiers of men's soccer in Spain, has previously been subjected to homophobic taunts. He expressed solidarity with Ruiz, stating, "There are many more of us on the right side, Nacho Ruiz, no doubt about it."
Quintanar del Rey, the opposing team, promised a thorough investigation into the incident and reiterated their commitment to fighting discrimination. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about homophobia in football. A YouGov survey examining homophobia in men's professional soccer across the five major European leagues revealed mixed feelings among fans. In Spain, 46% of fans believed the situation had improved over the past decade, while 22% felt it had worsened.
The survey highlighted that attitudes towards homophobia in football remain a contentious issue in Europe, with France reporting the highest percentage of fans who believe the situation has deteriorated.
As the football community continues to grapple with these challenges, players like Nacho Ruiz and Alberto Lejarraga remain vocal in their fight against discrimination. Their courage and solidarity serve as a beacon of hope for more inclusive and respectful sports environments.
