Bringing soccer and LGBTQ+ together: Football Pride 2025

Football Pride, now in its third year, isn't just any event. It buzzes with conversations, arts, and cultural exchanges focused on LGBTQ+ experiences in soccer. The 2025 edition found its home in Leicester, a city still fondly reminiscing about Leicester City's shock Premier League triumph nearly a decade ago—a time when Rainbow Laces was just beginning. But it begs a question: are today's top soccer players really getting behind these inclusion efforts?

Get involved: Breaking down barriers in sports

Football Pride throws its doors wide open, inviting everyone interested in understanding LGBTQ+ issues in sports. The event covers everything from locker room banter right through engaging broader societal discussions. At one session, Hugo Scheckter, who founded Player Care Group and belongs on LGBTQ+ Professionals in Football Collective, shared his views. He noted how many in men‘s soccer remain distant from LGBTQ+ conversations, not because they don't care, but due mainly due this lack exposure. But when they're invited in, they can be unexpectedly open.

Hugo suggests having "coffee chats," a relaxed space where tough topics can be unpacked without judgment, often leading even seasoned players face revelations. He shared a personal story about a casual night out with a player and his girlfriend at a renowned gay bar in London. Despite initial nerves about being spotted, they ended up having a blast. The player later said, "Why wouldn't I enjoy a night out at a gay bar?"

Personal journeys: Voices from those on field

Josh Cavallo, one few openly gay professional male players, also shared his experiences at Football Pride. Now that he lives in England, he spoke about what it was like coming out his teammates. Their response? Tears and genuine support. "It was life changing," Josh said. "Soon after though, things went back normal, with teammates wanting know about my life both on off field." This acceptance—this real curiosity—helped him bridge his personal professional worlds.

Alongside Josh was El Finneran, an athlete and UEFA-licensed coach who identifies as nonbinary. While embracing their gender identity in this field has its struggles, it has also nurtured a sense community representation, encouraging others feel safe being themselves.

Advocacy and research: Building inclusive spaces

Dr. Beth Burgess, a researcher whose recent study focused on LGBTQ+ coaches' experiences, also spoke at event. Dr. Burgess underscored how vital it amplifies marginalized voices in sports, as these insights inform policies initiatives. "Dialogue inclusivity should go beyond sexuality," Dr. Burgess stated. Tapping diverse perspectives are essential in achieving real progress.

With Premier League gearing up launch a new inclusion campaign, these conversations ensure initiatives truly resonate with and reflect needs stories within LGBTQ+ community.
