Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has recently been stirring up a bit with his firm stance against some cities in Florida that want their Pride-themed crosswalks. He's claiming these cities are just putting on a show with their colorful crosswalks. This comes as part and parcel with his broader plan: a ban on street art, including all sorts that champion social causes.>
At a press conference, Governor DeSantis didn't hold back, saying, "It's like they think they're above everyone else. Places like Key West are always going in that direction—they just can't help themselves." These words pretty much capture his administration's ongoing squabble with places like Key West and Delray Beach. These cities aren't planning on ditching their bright crosswalks anytime soon.>
DeSantis's administration stands firm: you can't just put up street art without getting a nod from Florida's Department Of Transportation (FDOT). This comes from a new law he signed, saying a big “no” from now on. Jared Perdue, who heads FDOT, backed it up by stating, "Street art's out, and we're scrubbing off whatever doesn't meet state and federal rules.">
The officials argue that street art might cause drivers distraction. Yet, according a study from Bloomberg Philanthropies in 2022, flashy intersections saw a 50% drop in pedestrian or cyclist accidents. They also reported a 25% drop in driver and walker conflicts, plus less jaywalking. Surprising, right?>
In cities like Delray Beach, local leaders think it boils down more about politics than road safety. Delray Beach Vice Mayor Rob Long said at a meeting, "Let's be honest. It's got nothing really do with traffic safety. This one purely political. It's part and parcel with that same cultural tug-of-war where symbols that include are picked on because they stand up as signs embracing everyone." He waved that traffic study around as proof that state reasoning needs more depth.>
And it isn't only Pride symbols that are on their hit list. This new rule aims at murals spotlighting racial justice and even just pretty artwork. Take Tallahassee, where a school mural made by students had its day in court and lost, decorating pink slip included.>
The enforcement here leaves little room. Cities that push back may see their funds trimmed. Sometimes, state officials have gone around local leaders, erasing murals unexpectedly. They painted over a rainbow crosswalk overnight in Orlando, only repaint it when protesters brought it back. It shows they're pretty serious about this policy.>
State Representative Anna Eskamani didn't hold back her criticism, stating, "The state spending this much time and money on a crosswalk? It's nonsense. You could be fixing potholes instead. No one even noticed 'til you made it a fuss.">
The back-and-forth over Pride crosswalks and street murals takes center stage in Florida, shining a spotlight on cultural and political waves, and reflecting bigger talks about representation and LGBTQ+ rights. As things unfold, Florida cities kind find themselves in middle mix.>
