Finding balance: a trans musician's journey

Chattting with Ash Johnston, stage name BB Sway, was like peeling back layers on his fascinating life. We dove deep, touching on London's vibrant music scene, how testosterone has changed his voice, and his family's complex dynamics. Now soaking up Melbourne's sun, Johnston laughs about feeling a bit "loopy" from finally seeing clear skies after a long winter. "The sun's finally out after a really long winter," he says, "so I'm just soaking it all up."

Musical evolution with becoming you

Johnston's latest three-track EP, aptly titled *Becoming You*, brings a bit sunshine, even though it was mostly written under London's moody skies. Since his debut in 2019, he's been turning heads with his lo-fi, ethereal vibe, blending light production with deep, emotional lyrics. This EP marks his return after a two-year hiatus, capturing a transformative time in his life. His transition and move from London, with its bustling pace, have shaped this musical project, while Melbourne's laid-back feel offers a calming backdrop.

Personal and artistic shifts

Feeling a pull towards change, Johnston left London—a move he hinted at in his 2021 EP, *Pearl*. His journey, spanning Hong Kong, UK, and now Melbourne, resonates through his music, particularly in "Road." During this time, Johnston took a step back from creating his own music, opting instead, writing and producing with others. In early 2023, he felt testosterone's impact, changing his vocal range. "I knew I'd go through a second puberty," he says, grappling with his once-sweet, caramel voice

"I kept telling myself I could still sing, it'd just be different," Johnston reminisces. While tough, he's embraced transitioning, finding authenticity within himself. This self-acceptance shines in his music, where his voice finds new harmonies.

Family dynamics and self-discovery

In his EP, Johnston dives deep intot his family relationships. With "Why'd You Think I Called You On The Phone?" he addresses discussing top surgery with a distant father. The title track explores strained parental ties and shared traits with his father.

"It was eye-opening accepting that and learning about those parts that remind me him," Johnston reflects. Despite these struggles, he finds peace in understanding his own roots and how they shape him.

Embracing change and joy ahead

Creating music with his new vocal range fills Johnston with "euphoria." He cherishes his earlier work too, even as transition changes things. With new tunes on deck, some from before his transition, he's pondering how best share them.

As Johnston grows both personally and artistically, he's soaking up Melbourne's sunny days, ready embrace whatever's around corner. *Becoming You* by BB Sway, join conversation below and share your thoughts with kindness.
