Finding Confidence on the Fairway: JP Van Der Walt's Story

JP van der Walt's journey through the world of golf has been one of growth, both personally and professionally. Born in South Africa, JP's passion for golf has taken him across the globe, shaping his identity not only as an athlete but as an openly gay man. His story is one of perseverance, courage, and the drive to inspire future generations.

Having started his golfing career with junior golf in South Africa, JP eventually moved to the United States to play college golf. He attended Columbus State University in Georgia, where his experiences both on and off the course helped him become the confident, proud individual he is today. JP's professional career included competing on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa for five years, followed by a successful decade as a golf coach.

Today, JP works with the College Golf Guide, where he helps young golfers navigate their careers with the expertise and passion he has developed over the years. "My day-to-day is all about talking to kids and helping them find the best path for college and preparing them for college golf," says JP during a Zoom call, reflecting on his role in mentoring the next generation of golfers.

JP's love for sports was instilled in him by his family, especially his father. "I grew up in a household where sports were a significant part of our lives," he recalls. "We had tennis courts and golf greens right at home, which was a fantastic environment to grow up in." His early exposure to sports laid the foundation for his future in golf.

When asked about his attraction to golf, JP explains, "The challenge of the game is what intrigues me. Golf is a sport that mirrors life—it tests you mentally and physically, and how you handle these challenges reveals your true character." His coaching philosophy reflects this belief, as he often assesses young athletes based on how they handle difficult situations rather than their performance on good days.

JP's journey into professional golf was as much about following his dreams as it was about overcoming personal hurdles. "I wanted to play college golf in the U.S.," he says, "following in my brother's footsteps." His journey saw him overcome initial setbacks, such as taking the SATs lightly, before finally making it to Columbus State University and pursuing his professional dreams.

Coming out as gay midway through his professional career presented its own challenges. "I was afraid it would be a distraction," JP admits. "I prefer to think of it as 'letting people in' rather than 'coming out.'" His fears were eventually laid to rest as he found support and camaraderie among his peers. "My family was my first concern, but when I told them, nobody cared—it actually made things better," he adds.

JP's openness about his identity has only added to his confidence. "Being open about who I am has made me more confident in my abilities," he says. "When people ask about my personal life, I'm honest. It's important to have conversations with the real me." This authenticity has resonated with those around him, further strengthening his relationships within the golfing community.

Discussing the broader landscape for LGBTQ+ individuals in sports, JP reflects, "There's still work to be done, but the game of golf is opening up. Events like the World Pride golf tournament show progress. It's important to challenge outdated mindsets and create a more inclusive environment for everyone." He emphasizes the role of inclusive events and the need for golf courses to host diverse activities.

For JP, the journey has been rewarding. "The greatest success is reaching the point where I am today," he concludes. "I have a wonderful partner, a supportive family, and a career that I love. The acceptance I've felt has been a joy, and I hope to see more of this acceptance in the sports world."
