This story, originally shared over a decade ago, reflects the profound journey of self-discovery and acceptance of a young athlete. For twelve years, Derek Schell, a senior guard for Division II Hillsdale College, grappled with his identity in an environment that didn’t always feel welcoming.
Growing up in a Milwaukee suburb, Derek was always aware of four truths: the blue Power Ranger was the best, Coach K was legendary in college basketball, the Green Bay Packers embodied righteousness, and he was different. The first three he embraced; the last, he struggled against. It wasn't until he realized that his difference was his sexuality that he began to understand himself. "I am gay," he accepted, and in that moment, a journey began.
Basketball was Derek's sanctuary. A place where he could lose himself, away from the confusion and depression that plagued his teenage years. He excelled academically, drawing attention to his scholastic prowess rather than his personal struggles. Yet, in the Catholic high school halls, he felt the weight of expectations to be a star athlete and date the pretty girl. "I lived up to everyone's expectations but didn't fit into my own world," he reflects.
His family background in sports created expectations. His parents were Division II basketball players, and his sister was a multi-sport athlete. Derek strived to meet those standards while nurturing a love for music, art, and a growing awareness of his attraction to men. The dichotomy of athlete and artist created an internal conflict, leaving him feeling isolated.
The turning point came in college. Despite plans to maintain a "normal" life, Derek realized he had to prioritize his happiness. Meeting his boyfriend, Kevin, gave him the courage to live authentically. "I had no more time for living to please others," he states. Coming out to friends and family was daunting, but necessary. "Normal is a boring mold," Derek discovered, "I just want to be accepted."
His family, initially challenged, became his pillars of support. And when Derek told his teammates individually, they treated him no differently. "They respected me," Derek shares, "nothing changed in our bond." This acceptance reignited his passion for basketball, reminding him why he loved the game since childhood.
With acceptance came a renewed enthusiasm for basketball. "The game is my antidote," Derek smiles, "a solace in an empty gym." The sport, which once felt like a burden, now enriches his life, providing lessons and bonds that endure. "I’m ready for my final college season," he notes, with excitement and his teammates by his side.
Derek’s journey is one of embracing all facets of himself. "I can be an athlete, a friend, a brother, and gay," he asserts. In experiencing both homophobia and unconditional love, Derek learned to value his unique identity. "Life is too short to be anything but happy," his sister's quote resonates deeply with him now.
He challenges others to be true to themselves. "You can be who you are and still achieve your dreams," Derek encourages. "Be brave. Be love. Be you."
Derek Schell is a senior at NCAA Division II Hillsdale College, majoring in International Business, and a guard on the men's basketball team. He welcomes connections and shares his journey on social media.
