The evolution of LGBTQ representation in professional wrestling has been remarkable, with events increasingly highlighting and celebrating the LGBTQ community. This growth is evident in events held during Pride Month and throughout the year, showcasing the expanding intersection between LGBTQ-led promotions, Pride and advocacy organizations, and a growing base of LGBTQ pro wrestling fans. Professional wrestling has emerged as a source of both joy and resistance for LGBTQ communities, particularly under current political challenges.
A New Alliance in New York City
Illustrating this developing relationship is the new partnership between the New York City-based promotion, Battle Club Pro, and NYC Pride. On Sunday, Battle Club Pro is set to host “Fight For Pride II,” marking the first pro wrestling event associated with NYC Pride, to be held in Brooklyn, NY.
This collaboration has been in the works for over a year. The inaugural “Fight For Pride” event was held last year, and according to openly LGBTQ pro wrestler and event organizer Brian Bomb, the partnership with NYC Pride began shortly after his experiences working with San Francisco’s Full Queer promotion, which frequently collaborates with LGBTQ organizations.
Brian Bomb expressed his aspiration to bring a similar spirit to New York, inspired by the support seen in events like San Francisco's Folsom Street Fair, where large crowds gather to watch wrestling. He shared his dream of someday having a wrestling event integrated with the NYC Pride parade, emphasizing the significance of this partnership.
Rising Demand and Expanded Venues
Due to high demand and the heat expected on Sunday, the venue for “Fight For Pride II” has been moved indoors to a larger, air-conditioned space. This change allows more fans to attend, with additional tickets now available.
The event will feature numerous out LGBTQ pro wrestlers from the New York and New Jersey areas, as well as talents from across the country. Notable participants include Full Queer co-founder Marco Mayur and Florida-based rising star Jay Luxx.
Jay Luxx, during a podcast interview, expressed his excitement and inspiration drawn from New York’s rich history of LGBTQ activism and the role of Black trans individuals in the fight for civil rights.
Honoring Queer Performance and History
Brian Bomb has taken care to ensure that some matches pay homage to New York City's tradition of queer performance art, particularly drag and ballroom culture, which have deep historical ties to the city's queer civil rights advocacy. The relationship between pro wrestling and drag has been extensively documented, and ballroom culture has been embraced by events like Billy Dixon’s “Paris Is Bumping.”
Among the key matches is a rare and significant one-on-one bout between Brianna Bandz and Nikki Winters, two Black trans women who share a deep personal and professional connection. As trainees at Brooklyn’s T2T Academy, their participation in this event is not just a personal milestone but also a remembrance of the leadership Black trans women have historically provided in the LGBTQ civil rights movement, notably from the time of the Stonewall riots in 1969.
Brianna Bandz, speaking on a podcast, emphasized the profound importance of this match, highlighting that New York is where significant parts of the LGBTQ movement began.
A Double Meaning for the Event Name
The theme of the event resonates with NYC Pride 2025’s theme, “Rise Up: Pride in Protest.” In light of over 600 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills being proposed, attacks on trans healthcare, and the shutdown of LGBTQIA+ support lines, it is crucial to create events that reflect the diverse spectrum of the LGBTQ community.
Matthew Şenız-Cheng, Associate Director of Corporate Partnerships at NYC Pride, emphasized the importance of visibility and providing spaces for the community and allies to gather, whether in a wrestling ring or during Pride marches.
Brian Bomb echoed these sentiments, stating, “It’s about fighting in the ring as out LGBTQ individuals and striving for visibility and authenticity, but it’s also about the broader socio-political movement, especially for our trans siblings. This fight for pride is essential both inside and outside the ring.”
