Rutger published: Father of Transgender Daughter Challenges Perceptions with Thought-Provoking Question

Jesse Thorn, a well-known content creator and father of a transgender daughter, recently shared a powerful message aimed at those who struggle to accept transgender individuals. In his heartfelt defense of trans youth, he posed a question to those who harbor anti-trans sentiments: "What if we ask ourselves about ourselves, and we don’t like the answer?"

Thorn’s journey began about a decade ago when his eldest child confided in her parents that she was transgender. This pivotal moment led Thorn’s wife to write a picture book inspired by their daughter's revelation, titled It Feels Good to Be Yourself. Thorn vividly remembers the first time he read the book's printout. "I was just pouring tears," he recalled. "You’d think it was because it’s a beautiful story about our trans kid, but it was actually about all of us."

Reflecting on Gender Identity

As Jesse reflected on his daughter’s experience, he began to evaluate his own gender identity. "I’m cisgender," Thorn explained. "Everyone always assumed I was a man, and I actually am a man. Until my daughter came out, I never really thought about my gender identity or anyone else’s. It was transparent to me."

Thorn described the challenge of imagining his daughter’s experience, which was vastly different from his own. He noted that this initial difficulty in understanding is where many people’s discomfort with transgender individuals originates. "I never chose my identity, so my daughter must be choosing hers," he said. "It felt like a rejection of my way of being in the world."

This reflexive response, Thorn observed, mirrors the hostility many feel toward trans people. "People are caught off guard," he noted. "They think, ‘I didn’t choose anything. These trans people must be choosing. I’m neutral. They’re different. They are rejecting me.’ This discomfort can lead to hostility."

Encouraging Self-Reflection

Thorn urges people to consider the approach to gender identity as presented in his wife’s book. "In It Feels Good to Be Yourself, there is no ‘This way is normal. This way is different.’ There is an expectation that each of us will engage with our own identities, think about who we are, and find our own answers," he explained.

Thorn pointed out that transgender people often undergo a process of deep self-reflection because society’s assumptions about them are usually incorrect. In contrast, cisgender individuals rarely face such introspection because societal assumptions align with their identities.

It Feels Good to Be Yourself has been banned in numerous libraries and classrooms, not because of explicit content, but because it challenges societal norms by treating trans and cis children equally. "The problem," Thorn believes, "is that it asks cis people to think about themselves, which reveals a vulnerability that makes people uncomfortable."

Challenging Societal Norms

Jesse Thorn believes that this discomfort often stems from the fear of introspection. "It’s scary," he admitted. "What if we ask ourselves about ourselves, and we don’t like the answer?"

To those uncomfortable with transgender people, Thorn suggests introspection: "Ask yourself: Is it because they’re different, or because their existence forces you to confront your own identity?"

This powerful message encourages us to look inward and question our assumptions, fostering a more inclusive and understanding society for all individuals, regardless of gender identity.
