Rutger published: Fashion: Breaking Barriers and Elevating Trans Visibility

John Bruce, co-director at PRM Modelling Agency, is passionate about championing the narratives of transgender models that the agency represents. Alongside his husband, Paulo Ribeiro, Bruce leads the London-based agency, which was established in 2012. The agency prides itself on representing many celebrated models, such as the renowned trans twins Madelyn and Margo Whitley.

Bruce emphasizes the agency's unwavering support for trans models. "We stand firmly behind trans models here," he states. Reflecting on the changes in the modelling industry over the years, Bruce acknowledges improvements in diversity. However, he admits that the industry still has progress to make, noting, "It’s not quite where we want it to be."

Trans models like Alex Consani have made significant strides, with Consani making history as the first trans woman to win the Model of the Year award at the Fashion Awards. Bruce acknowledges the challenges faced by other transgender models aspiring to similar achievements, expressing concern about the socio-political climate: "We are going to be challenged by the US government, and the UK. We feel a lot of people are going to be washed down."

Ribeiro adds his perspective on the transformative nature of fashion, stating, "Fashion is about breaking barriers. We never know what’s going to happen in six months." While the industry is inclusive, Ribeiro points out that inclusivity can vary depending on where products are marketed.

The path to success in fashion, according to Bruce, is demanding and requires years of hard work and dedication. He and Ribeiro commend legendary supermodel Naomi Campbell as an exemplar of the discipline and dedication essential for success in the fashion world.

Living Pride Every Day

Bruce and Ribeiro, who met in London after Bruce's return from South Africa and Ribeiro's from Brazil, view London as the gay capital of the world. Bruce reflects on his experiences in the city, sharing, "I’ve never experienced any abuse or negative behaviour from anyone. I’ve always felt that being myself has helped me get to where I am." Ribeiro echoes this sentiment, stating, "No one cares who you are, which made me feel so welcome here."

When asked about their plans for Pride month, Bruce explains that they celebrate Pride throughout the year, embodying their commitment to LGBTQ+ visibility and inclusivity.

John Bruce's upcoming role as a judge on Poland’s Next Top Model highlights his continued influence and commitment to diversity in the fashion industry. Both Bruce and Ribeiro are dedicated to fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of their identity, can feel welcomed and celebrated.
