Rutger published: Fans Moved by 'Dear Viv' Documentary on The Vivienne's Life and Legacy

The new documentary Dear Viv offers an emotional journey through the vibrant life, untimely passing, and enduring legacy of James Lee Williams, famously known as The Vivienne. Produced by World of Wonder, the company behind RuPaul’s Drag Race, this heartfelt tribute has captivated audiences, with many describing it as a deeply moving experience.

Dear Viv delves into the personal history of Williams with intimate interviews from the late entertainer’s family and friends. Viewers hear from Williams' mother Cassie, father Lee, and sister Chanel, who share touching anecdotes that paint a picture of a mischievous and talented young individual who embraced his identity early on. Williams came out as gay at the age of 14, and by 16, he had already entered Liverpool’s drag scene, leaving his family home in Wales behind.

Fans of The Vivienne are treated to accounts from several Drag Race colleagues, including Cheryl The Queen, Baga Chipz, and Raja, who offer their reflections on Williams’ enormous impact on British drag. As the documentary progresses, it explores both the triumphs and trials of Williams' life, including his struggles with addiction.

Williams' tragic death in January at the age of 32 from cardio-respiratory arrest, exacerbated by ketamine use, is a pivotal moment in the documentary. Dear Viv doesn’t shy away from discussing these challenges, providing a candid look at how Williams sometimes sacrificed his well-being to pursue his dreams. Despite these struggles, his legacy as a trailblazer in the drag community remains undeniable.

Dear Viv shares a dual narrative—one of inspiration and heartache. Fans have praised the documentary for its ability to leave them in tears while also celebrating the joy and laughter that Williams brought into the world. One viewer shared on social media, “Just watched Dear Viv about The Vivienne. Emotional, funny and such a brilliant tribute. A proper reminder of why they were so loved. Well worth a watch and tissues recommended.”

Another fan echoed these sentiments, expressing the profound emotional impact of the documentary: “Finished watching Dear Viv, and I’m in tears after seeing her friends and family celebrate how talented and how much of a phenomenal person she was.”

The documentary’s emotional resonance is further amplified by the support of fellow drag queens like Trinity The Tuck, who was a co-star on All Stars 7 with The Vivienne. Trinity urged her fans to watch Dear Viv to honor The Vivienne’s memory, writing, “I miss you so much my friend! There will never be another person like you.”

Political figures, such as Labour Party MP Antonia Bance, have also expressed their admiration for Williams. Bance described the documentary as tear-inducing, adding, “Proud to be helping his family Chanel, Cassie, and Lee with their campaign to get ketamine reclassified and raise awareness of its harm.” This campaign is being pursued in partnership with the drug charity Adferiad, which aims to shed light on the dangers of ketamine.

As The Vivienne was a two-time Drag Race legend, her influence on the drag world and beyond cannot be overstated. Through Dear Viv, audiences are given a chance to partake in a beautiful tribute to a life that inspired countless individuals while also sparking important conversations about addiction and its consequences.

The documentary is currently available for streaming on BBC iPlayer and WOW Presents Plus. It serves as a poignant reminder of The Vivienne’s contributions to the LGBTQ+ community, as well as a call to action in addressing the issues surrounding substance use.
