LaLa Ri, beloved by fans of RuPaul's Drag Race, has announced a much-anticipated return to the drag scene, following a short hiatus during which he had stepped away from the art form.
LaLa Ri’s journey with drag has been a rollercoaster for both the performer and his fans. Known for his charismatic performances and unique sense of style, LaLa first captured hearts on the 13th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2021, where he was celebrated as Miss Congeniality. Despite being eliminated early, his impact was undeniable.
In 2023, LaLa made a triumphant return to television, participating in the eighth series of Drag Race All Stars. There, he dazzled audiences and was awarded the title of ‘Queen of the Fame Games’, even though he was eliminated in fifth place. His vibrant personality and memorable performances have made him a standout figure in the drag community.
In late 2024, LaLa Ri surprised his supporters by announcing a temporary departure from drag with a cryptic message on social media. The post read that he was "leaving [drag] behind," which left many fans confused and curious about his future plans.
However, fans were given a glimmer of hope when LaLa Ri took to Instagram on March 23 to share a message that sparked excitement across the Drag Race community. "Y’all favorite homegirl will be back in a couple of months," he declared. "She just needed to be revived," referencing both his drag persona and his recent tour named Revival.
Further bolstering this announcement, LaLa shared on X (formerly Twitter) sentiments like, "Sometimes you just need a good break," and a boldly capitalized "RIVIVED". These posts suggest a rejuvenation and a readiness to re-engage with his drag persona.
Reflecting on his decision to step back, LaLa Ri spoke candidly about his relationship with drag in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "I’m removing myself from the drag character," he explained. "I feel like drag places us in a box as artists and entertainers, and sometimes you’re limited to what you can do artistically."
LaLa Ri, who has been in the entertainment industry as a dancer and choreographer, expressed that drag was initially another performance outlet rather than a dedicated career path. "I never intended to have a full-fledged drag career," he shared. "It blew up, I got on RuPaul’s Drag Race, and it took off from there. It was like: ‘I guess I’ve got to stick with this for a while’."
Despite these reservations, his decision to return signals that LaLa Ri is ready to embrace the drag world once more, but perhaps with a perspective that balances his artistic aspirations with the expectations of his drag persona.
For now, fans eagerly await LaLa Ri’s return to the stage. There is much anticipation around how he will evolve and continue to engage audiences with his performances. As he steps back into the spotlight, many hope that this new chapter will bring even more of the delightful and bold performances that have defined his drag career so far.
"Stepping into this new chapter has been such a wild and thrilling ride," LaLa shared. "I may be leaving the drag behind, but trust me, The LaLa Ri Experience is still very much alive and serving! Can’t wait to keep evolving and giving y’all even more."
