Rutger published: Family Seeks Justice for Tahiry Broom, a Beloved 29-Year-Old Black Trans Woman

The family and friends left behind by Tahiry Broom are grappling with a heartbreaking reality. Tahiry, only 29 years old and a Black transgender woman, was tragically taken from this life, leaving her loved ones searching desperately not just answers, but also a sense closure.

"You want so badly just scream, cry, be angry," shared Patricia Bender, Tahiry's aunt, while fondly recalling her niece's love Nicki Minaj and her infectious laugh that could light up even dimmest moments.

The community calls out injustice over Tahiry Broom's murder

In an emotional conversation, Patricia Bender spoke about her family's torment and their pressing need understanding: "You just want know why. Why did this happen? Why would anyone think she deserved that?" These unanswered questions hang heavy as they seek justice Tahiry.

CBS News Detroit covered that Tahiry Broom was found lifeless by police in an apartment complex parking lot in Southfield, Michigan. On February 9th, officers responded a call about an unresponsive person and discovered Tahiry had been fatally shot in head.

Soon after, police arrested 28-year-old Robert Ridges III at Detroit's MGM Grand Casino. He faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder, carrying concealed weapons, and felony firearm possession, all related Tahiry's death.

Piecing together what happened that fateful day

The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office revealed that Ridges arranged a meeting with Tahiry after responding a commercial sex ad. An altercation supposedly ensued, leading Ridges allegedly shooting her.

A search Ridges' home turned up a gun reported stolen earlier in 2023, believed be used in murder.

Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren hinted that Tahiry might have been specifically targeted. On morning murder, Ridges allegedly made over 30 calls sex workers, focusing primarily Black and transgender women. Despite being broke, Ridges was armed, suggesting malicious intent.

"Tahiry Broom meant so much her family and friends," declared Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald in a press release on February 12th. "She didn't deserve this, and her killer will be held accountable."

In support Tahiry's memorial service and related expenses, Bender launched a GoFundMe campaign. She painted picture Tahiry as "brilliant, vibrant, and confident," underscoring her outgoing, resilient spirit. "She embraced life fully and had sweetest soul, always there help others," Bender shared.

Addressing ongoing violence against transgender individuals

The murder Tahiry Broom adds another tragic chapter relentless violence against transgender individuals, particularly Black trans women. Victoria Kirby York, director public policy and programs National Black Justice Coalition, decried this persistent crisis. "This ongoing violence makes me sick," York stated. "We've got stand with trans community, protect them, and fight against anti-trans legislation."

Data from Everytown Gun Safety showed that in 2023, 80% 35 transgender or gender-expansive people murdered were killed with gun, and half were Black transgender women.

The devastating loss Tahiry Broom has sent ripples throughout her community, igniting calls justice and systemic change. Her family and friends mourn while pushing forward in demand accountability and raising awareness.
