Jude Howarth, known as the adult model and genderfluid influencer F1NN5TER, recently faced unexpected criticism after revealing his support for a UK-based gender-affirming care provider, Anne Healthcare. Despite anticipating some backlash, Howarth was surprised by the nature of the feedback received from within the transgender community itself.
In a recent YouTube video, Howarth announced that he had made a significant financial contribution to Anne Healthcare, a nonprofit organization established to provide gender-affirming care. The announcement was met with mixed reactions, with some praising the influencer for his support of trans healthcare and others expressing concerns about the care model and associated costs.
Anne Healthcare, which Howarth supported financially, offers a membership model with a one-time setup fee of £200, followed by a sliding scale monthly membership fee. The first-year monthly fee is £150, decreasing to £100 in the second year, and £50 from the third year onwards. This membership includes access to medication support, health checks, counseling, and ongoing care, although it does not cover prescription costs.
Critics of the model have described the costs as excessive, with some saying it amounts to £1,800 annually. One viral post labeled the organization as "predatory and negligent," drawing comparisons to other private healthcare providers.
Speaking about the criticism, Howarth emphasized that while he anticipated feedback, the specific critiques were unexpected. "We were prepared for criticism from those opposed to trans youth services," he noted. "The criticism from within the community took us by surprise, but it's been useful in making necessary clarifications."
Howarth believes much of the criticism stems from confusion about the services offered and misunderstandings due to differing healthcare systems in regions like the UK and the US. "I understand the concerns about exploitation, but a lot of it seems to come from misunderstandings," he said.
Despite the backlash, Howarth found overwhelming support from his community, especially trans fans who have moved from DIY hormone regimens to Anne Healthcare's structured support. "Many are grateful for the level of care Anne Healthcare provides," he stated.
TransVitae journalist Bricki suggested that the backlash was less about the clinic's offerings and more about the broader context of trans healthcare challenges in the UK. "Years of waiting for NHS appointments and seeing public services falter has left the community desperate," Bricki wrote.
According to co-director Lizzie Jordan, Anne Healthcare serves at least 97 trans individuals and has received substantial praise for its services. "Patients commend the respect and care they receive," Jordan said. "We aim to provide options for trans people amidst the frustration with existing services."
Jordan acknowledged the challenges faced by the trans community regarding healthcare access and quality. She stressed the importance of providing more choices, despite the understandable desire for free services. "High-quality care requires resources, and while we agree it should be free, that's not feasible in the current system," she explained.
Anne Healthcare provides tools and support for patients transitioning from DIY methods, ensuring their hormone levels and overall health are closely monitored. "Our data shows significant improvements in patients' hormone levels from previous providers," Jordan noted. "The community's voice against substandard care is vital, and we strive to set a higher standard."
As Howarth continues to navigate the reactions from the trans community, he remains committed to supporting initiatives that offer comprehensive, affirming healthcare options.
