Rutger published: Exploring Untold Stories: Queer Hispanic Immigrants in the U.S.

The immigrant experience in the United States is as diverse as it is complex, with countless stories that reflect the courage, resilience, and determination of people seeking a better life. Among these are the lesser-known narratives of queer Hispanic immigrants, who face unique challenges at the intersection of immigration and LGBTQ+ identity.

In recent years, documentaries have emerged as a powerful medium to shine a light on these stories, offering a deeper understanding of the struggles and triumphs of queer Hispanic immigrants. Here, we explore five documentaries released between 2007 and 2021 that provide a window into these experiences.

Through Thick and Thin (2007)

Filmed at a time when marriage equality was not yet a reality, Sebastian Codoba’s Through Thick and Thin documents the lives of bi-national same-sex couples grappling with a system that did not recognize their partnerships. The film intimately follows seven couples as they navigate the challenges of staying together in a country where their love was not legally acknowledged. As debates around marriage equality continue, this film serves as a poignant reminder of the stakes for LGBTQ+ immigrants and their families.

Forbidden: Undocumented and Queer in Rural America (2016)

Directed by Tiffany Rhynard, Forbidden tells the inspirational story of Moises Serrano, a queer activist who boldly declares his identity as undocumented and unafraid. The documentary captures Serrano’s journey as he advocates for immigration reform and fights for his rights in rural North Carolina. Through intimate interviews and personal footage, viewers gain insight into the unique struggles faced by young Dreamers who are both LGBTQ+ and undocumented.

Unsettled: Seeking Refuge in America (2019)

In Unsettled, Tom Shepard explores the lives of four LGBTQ+ asylum seekers who arrive in the U.S. fleeing persecution in their home countries. The film follows a lesbian couple from Angola, a gay man from Syria, and a gender non-conforming individual from the Congo as they navigate a complex immigration system and attempt to build new lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Shepard’s documentary highlights the continued challenges that face LGBTQ+ refugees, even after reaching American soil.

The Infiltrators (2019)

Blending documentary and narrative styles, The Infiltrators by Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera tells the story of two young activists who infiltrate a Florida detention center to aid fellow undocumented immigrants. Set against the backdrop of political upheaval, the film combines real-life interviews and reenactments to depict the bravery of these young Dreamers as they fight for justice and dignity within the immigration system.

The Right Girls (2021)

The Right Girls, directed by Timothy Wolfer, follows the journey of three transgender women as they traverse Mexico to seek asylum in the United States. Fleeing discrimination and violence, Valentyna, Joanne Stefani, and Chantal find strength in their shared journey and form an unbreakable bond. Wolfer captures their courage and solidarity as they face countless obstacles on their 2,400-mile trek, highlighting the resilience of trans asylum seekers in pursuit of a life where they can live authentically.

These documentaries provide invaluable insights into the intersectional challenges faced by queer Hispanic immigrants in the U.S. They emphasize the importance of sharing diverse narratives to enrich our understanding of immigration and LGBTQ+ issues. As these stories unfold on screen, they remind us of the humanity behind the headlines and the ongoing fight for justice and equality for all immigrants.
