In 2022, creators Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham took on the challenge of reviving a beloved 1990s film with their Amazon Prime Video series, "A League of Their Own." This series not only paid homage to the original film but also addressed some of its historical oversights and added depth to its narrative.
The original 1992 film, directed by Penny Marshall, was a lighthearted portrayal of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), focusing on the Rockford Peaches during the 1943 season. While the film was celebrated for its humor and heart, it notably lacked explicit representation of the diverse identities of its players, particularly in terms of racial and sexual diversity.
Where the original film briefly touched on the exclusion of Black women, the 2022 series took a bolder stance by following the story of Maxine “Max” Chapman, a Black character played by Chanté Adams. This storyline ran parallel to the main narrative of Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobson) and the other Peaches, enriching the world of the AAGPBL with layers of authenticity and representation.
Moreover, the series did what many LGBTQ fans had long hoped for: it explored the likely queer identities of some players. Maybelle Blair, a real-life former AAGPBL player, and others were given a narrative that acknowledged the complex relationships with the league's strict gender norms, adding an authentic layer to their stories.
The joy of watching "A League of Their Own" isn't diminished by the 2022 series; rather, the new series enhances the enjoyment by shining a light on the original film’s subtext. The 1992 film remains a fun, engaging watch, yet the series enriches its narrative by making explicit what was only implicit in the original.
The film centered on Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty), sisters navigating their roles in the AAGPBL. While the film never explicitly delved into LGBTQ themes, keen viewers might have picked up on the suggestive undertones, particularly in how Dottie struggled between her love for baseball and the traditional role of a wife.
Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell's characters, Mae Mordabito and Doris Murphy respectively, also provided material for a queer interpretation. Their backstory and dynamic hinted at more than just friendship, with Doris's traditionally masculine occupation juxtaposed against Mae’s femme persona.
O'Donnell, who later came out as a lesbian, added a layer of authenticity to her character. Her 2022 role further cemented the acknowledgment of queer players in the league, reflecting what couldn't be overtly shown in 1992.
Similarly, Lori Petty's portrayal of Kit, with her tomboyish energy, contributed to the film’s subtle queer undertones. Over the years, Petty herself has become a lesbian icon, reinforcing these interpretations.
Despite the absence of overt queer narratives, the original film highlighted the AAGPBL's gender norms, indicating that non-conformity was part of their world. Scenes featuring makeovers and etiquette training subtly acknowledged the existence of lesbians in the league.
In retelling and expanding upon these stories, the 2022 series not only brought visibility to those previously omitted but celebrated the queer community within this historical context.
For those interested in revisiting this classic with a new perspective, the film will be screened outdoors at The Autry Museum in Los Angeles on June 21. This event will benefit Pride House LA/West Hollywood, providing a perfect occasion to appreciate both the film's legacy and its modern reinterpretation.
