Rutger published: Exploring the Origins of Elphaba’s Iconic Cardigan in 'Wicked: For Good'

The celebrated costume designer, Paul Tazewell, who brought his vision to the cinematic world of Wicked: For Good, has finally shared the fascinating backstory behind the now-famous ‘sex cardigan’ worn by the character Elphaba. This garment, initially seen in the highly anticipated sequel to 2024’s Wicked, has sparked widespread intrigue and rapidly become a beloved cultural reference online.

Since the film hit cinemas in late November, audiences have been enamored with the peculiar and oversized grey cardigan donned by Elphaba during the pivotal musical number, "As Long As You’re Mine". This song marks a significant moment for Elphaba, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, and Fiyero, played by Jonathan Bailey, as the latter abandons his impending marriage to Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, to embrace his true feelings for Elphaba.

The scene crescendos with the pair singing their hearts out and culminating in a magical levitation into bed, following Elphaba’s decision to swap her usual attire for the cozy knitwear in question. This moment struck a chord with viewers and has since taken on a life of its own, transforming into a popular meme and a source of amusement across social media platforms.

"Are you wearing the—" "Elphaba’s sex cardigan? Yes, I am," reads one such viral meme, capturing the whimsical spirit of this cultural phenomenon.

The Creation of an Icon

Paul Tazewell, who has earned an Oscar for his extraordinary work on Wicked, revealed the practical and narrative-driven reasoning behind Elphaba’s cardigan in a conversation with NPR. “It emerged from an organic decision-making process about what Elphaba would realistically have access to,” Tazewell explained.

He elaborated, “Living independently, what choice would she make when selecting a garment that provides warmth and protection? For that scene, the cardigan functions as her robe.”

Tazewell further delved into Elphaba’s resourceful nature, noting, “She’s equipped with a loom in her treehouse, crafting garments from the natural elements that surround her. The sweater aligns perfectly with this aspect of her character.”

Addressing why the character, typically known for her striking black wardrobe, would opt for such a garment, Tazewell posed a thought-provoking question: “What significance does the cardigan hold for her?”

The cardigan is more than a piece of clothing; it’s a reflection of Elphaba’s identity and a testament to Tazewell’s commitment to character-driven costume design. "Her clothing choices," Tazewell added, "are consistent with the decisions that define her character’s priorities and sense of self."

Box Office Success and Cultural Impact

Wicked: For Good continues to captivate audiences, performing exceptionally well at both the UK and Irish box offices. Analytics data from Comscore highlights that the film garnered an additional £7.7 million ($10.1 million) during its second weekend, bringing its total earnings in these regions to an impressive £32 million ($42.2 million).

Globally, the success story expands, with the film amassing a remarkable $92.24 million in box office revenue worldwide.

This phenomenal reception underscores the film’s powerful connection with audiences and the enduring allure of the Wicked franchise. The cardigan’s viral fame is but one example of how the film continues to resonate and spark conversation among fans.
